ADRIAN THRILLS: When celebrities contributed to a tribute album last year, celebrities from all around the music industry revealed their admiration for Metallica. According to the Metallica Blacklist, the San Francisco-based actors are the ultimate standard-bearers for stadium-ready heavy metal. Who could argue with a fan club that includes Miley Cyrus, Phoebe Bridgers and Dave Gahan? But the band, who have released 125 million albums and headlined Glastonbury, didn't get to the top by hopping between genres. They have dabbled with acoustic guitars, blues, and symphonic strings, but they haven't changed to the model that gave them their triumph in the 1980s. The quartet's line-up has been unusually stable. They were joined by Danish-born drummer Lars Ulrich and singer James Hetfield in 1981, and bassist Robert Trujillo in 2003.
