HMV confirms it will reopen Oxford Street store later this year

It was dubbed "the world's most popular music store" and had a rich past dating back to 1921, which saw hundreds of celebrities perform and host record signings inside. However, HMV's flagship store in London's West End closed in February 2019, after being unprofitable due to rising market rates and dwindling footfall. The store at 363 Oxford Street was converted into one of the numerous gaudy American sweet shops in the area, but HMV is returning home after announcing that it had signed a lease to confirm the store's reopening later this year. In the face of fierce competition from cheaper internet stores and streaming, the company has developed a 'evolved retail strategy,' and it has announced that it would carry a diverse range of pop culture products, vinyl, film, TV, and music technology. The news brings a massive boost to beleaguered High Street, particularly Oxford Street, which has been one of the worst hit shopping areas in recent years, with major stores closing including Topshop, Debenhams, and House of Fraser. Authorities will also be greeted with the announcement as they crack down on the US-themed candy and souvenir shops, as well as counterfeit chocolate bars and dodgy vaping and toys as part of a £7.9 million tax scam probe.
