Dani Shapiro (born Daneile Joyce Shapiro, 1962) is an American writer who is best-selling memoirs Hourglass, Slow Motion, and Devotion.
She has also written for publications such as The New Yorker, The Oprah Magazine, Vogue, and ELLE.
Early life and education
Daneile Shapiro was born in New York City on April 10, 1962. She is the granddaughter of Paul Shapiro, a member of an Orthodox Jewish family (who later discovered that she was not her biological father), and Irene Shapiro from South Jersey. Shapiro attended a Solomon Schechter Jewish day school through the sixth grade, after which she attended the Pingry School in New Jersey. Grace Paley taught Sarah Lawrence College.
Personal life
Shapiro has been married to screenwriter Michael Maren since 1997, and they have a son, Jacob. Dani and her family immigrated from Brooklyn, NY, to Litchfield County, Connecticut, in the early 2000s.
Career
Playing with Fire, Fugitive Blue, Picturing the Wreck, Black & White, and Family History are among Shapiro's books. Slow Motion, Devotion, And Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life, Hourglass: Time, Memory, Marriage, and, most recently, Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love is one of her best-selling memoirs. Signal Fires, her latest book, will be published by Knopf in fall 2022.
Shapiro writes about her encounter with her biological father's inability through a DNA test, rather than Paul Shapiro; rather, she was identified by the primitive method of mixing Paul's sperm with that of an anonymous donor, which she later was able to identify. Intuiance debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list, with Ruth Franklin describing it as "beautifully written and deeply touching." The San Francisco Chronicle referred to Inheritance as "as comprehensibly read as a mystery book," while exploring the deeper truths of identity and family, as well as truth itself; a tale told with a sense of humor, honesty, and compassion." She co-founded the Sirenland Writers Conference, which takes place annually in Positano, Italy.
Shapiro created Family Secrets in 2019 in association with iHeart Radio. Each episode of this iTunes Top 10 podcast features a chat between Dani and a visitor who has experienced a family mystery and its consequences. The podcast's sixth season debuted on December 9, 2021; the show has over 22 million downloads.
