Early life and education
Harris is Nancy Lee Harris and Jay R. Harris' son. His father chairs Harvard University's radiation oncology residency program, and his mother, a Boston pathologist and an lymphomologist. Matthew Carmichael Harris, Matthew Carmichael Harris' younger brother, is a venture capitalist. Harris graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, in 1993.

Harris is married to Dr. Bianca Harris; they have a son. Despite the fact that he refers to himself as "half-Jewish" and culturally Jewish, he identifies as a Buddhist.

Career
Harris began his career as an anchor for WLBZ in Bangor, Maine. He spent two years at WCSH in Portland, Maine, as an anchor and political reporter. He was an anchor at New England Cable News from 1997 to 2000.
In 2000, he began working at ABC News. From 2006 to 2011, he anchored World News, ABC World News Tonight weekend editions, and Nightline. He is also a regular contributor to World News. In September 2005, he also anchored ABC's coverage of Hurricane Katrina. He was named as the new co-anchor for Good Morning America's weekend edition in October 2010. He was named a co-anchor for Nightline in October 2013, succeeding Bill Weir. Harris revealed in August 2021 that he would not leave ABC News to concentrate on his meditation company. On September 26, 2021, he resigned from ABC News.
Harris has been leading the network's reporting on religion, especially evangelicalism, and has spent 48 hours in solitary confinement for a story on criminal justice, in addition to reporting on a number of natural disasters and several mass shootings, as well as many combat zones.
