Guy Ritchie's Ministry of Ungently Warfare: As a trailer is posted, troops led by a swashbuckling commander robbed German and Italian ships from the Spanish island in 1942

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 1, 2024
They were the men accused by Winston Churchill of executing a "butcher-and-bolt reign of terror" behind enemy lines. One was a swashbuckling English chief, the other being a Danishman who preferred shooting with a bow and arrow. Gus March-Phillipps (inset left) and Anders Lassen were central figures in a mission that seemed more at home in a spy book than a thriller in January 1942. The clandestine Small Scale Raiding Force, which was under the command of the equally top-secret Special Operations Executive, was charged with captureting German and Italian vessels (one shown top right) from Spanish territory (bottom right, the island of Fernando Po) and sailing them to British-ruled Nigeria. This extraordinary act of piracy was a huge success, thanks in large part to future James Bond author Ian Fleming, who was then the SOE's liaison at the Admiralty. Now, celebrated director Guy Ritchie is expected to bring Operation Postmaster's tale to a big screen in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the trailer for which was revealed this week. Henry Cavill (left) as March-Philipps and Alan Ritchson as Anders Lassen, according to historian Damien Lewis' similarly titled 2014 film.

At last, the top-secret WW2 SAS mission is revealed: commandos robbed train and pushed it behind enemy lines to rescue hundreds of refugees from a concentration camp in an unprecedented effort that has been on hold for 80 years

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 28, 2023
In September 1943, British and French soldiers arrived in Taranto, Italy, where the local railway station rioted to capture the locomotive. They took it 50 miles deep into a Nazi-controlled zone, where hundreds of prisoners, including Jewish civilians, were held in savage conditions. The raiding party stormed out of the train and ambushed the Italian and German guards, denying 180 prisoners the opportunity to escape. The prisoners were loaded onto the train, which sped back to liberated territories with the Germans in a frantic chase. And the soldiers arrested the Pisticci camp commander in order to bring him to justice. Major Oswald Cary-Elwes (left) and his French deputy, Raymond Couraud, were involved in the daring operation, which involved 50 commandos, on September 13-14, 1943. It has come to light 80 years after historian Damien Lewis discovered classified information about it in the Kew archives, which were then lost.

Is this the most bizarre event EVER? Fashionistas in London are split on Met Gala, with some being baffled over the all-star party's 'randomness,' while others applaud a "love letter to theatre."

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 15, 2023
On Thursday evening, the great and good of fashion descended on London for the Vogue World bash, which was branded the UK's Met Gala. Though the annual New York event has been praised as the most important on the fashion calendar, London's version did not appear to be on point as talent was on display at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, which was not particularly impressive. Newspaper commentators were split on the occasion, which acts as a fundraiser for the UK's performing arts industry, with the magazine's Editor-in-Chief Anna handling proceedings and Vogue editor Edward Enninful attending.

'Who let James Corden in there? Following his return to the United Kingdom from America, television viewers are raving over the 'annoying' actor's surprise appearance at Vogue World, where he appeared with Sienna Miller and James McAvoy

The Gavin and Stacey actress (pictured left at the premiere and right earlier this month) took to the stage to perform a comedy sketch alongside other well-known performers, including Sienna Miller, James McAvoy, and Damien Lewis. The actors pretended to be ushers, reminding the audience that the performance at Theatre Royal Drury Lane was over and that they should leave as they began throwing garbage away. However, viewers watching from home have reacted anxiously, with others on X, formerly known as Twitter, expressing their dissatisfaction with Corden's on screen performance.

How SAS medic won Malcolm Pleydell Military Cross after life-saving heroics

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 6, 2023
Malcolm Pleydell was the first doctor to join the SAS after its creation by Lieutenant-David Stirling in 1941, and he received the coveted Military Cross for his services. According to historian Damien Lewis, he was instrumental in the aftermath of the disastrous "Operation Bigamy" raid on Italian-controlled Benghazi in September 1942, which'sinned against just about every founding precept of the SAS.' In Mr Lewis' latest book SAS Great Escapes II, which was released last month, the tale of Pleydell and his herois is told. The book describes how he saved the lives of many seriously wounded men in his care before leading hundreds of other less injured men more than 600 miles across a mostly open desert. However, he had to cope with the tragic death of four of the most seriously wounded four children after they were left behind near Benghazi because there was no space to carry them. Another man, whose name was 'Razor Blade,' died as a result of losing a coin and having to wait with the wounded in the hopes that the enemy would treat them. According to Pleydell's Military Cross citation, he 'attended to the wounded without any concern of his own safety,' including removing a bullet from one man's thigh as a German plane circled overhead.

Pages from SAS Great Escapes to line dead ends were deleted by a man who was lost in a cave network

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 27, 2023
The prospect of venturing into a secluded cave alone would cause them to be trembling. But for former teacher Tommy Soames (pictured left with author Damien Lewis), it was his idea of fun until he became trapped inside and decided he would die alone with no hope of rescue. That's exactly what happened when he was cavern hunting (entrance shown top right) near Montenegro's picturesque Lake Skadar last year. He survived the six-hour ordeal by tearing out pages from historian Damien Lewis' book SAS Great Escapes (bottom right) and using them, Hansel and Gretel-style, to mark every dead end until he figured out how to get out. Mr Lewis later received an email from the adventurer, who told him: 'Your book saved my life.' Last week, the pair (left) and the author's new book, SAS Great Escapes II, appeared together at the Churchill War Rooms in Westminster.
