Cynthia Ann Rothrock (born March 8, 1957) is an American martial artist and actress in martial arts films.

Rothrock has black belt rankings in seven styles of martial arts and was a top-notch performer in martial arts before becoming an actress.

Early life

Edward and Ann (Exeter) Markowski was born in Wilmington, Delaware, on March 8, 1957, to Edward and Ann (Exeter) Markowski. She grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and began learning martial arts at the age 13.

Personal life

Cynthia married Ernest Rothrock, a kung fu instructor, on September 25, 1976, in the Greenwood Section of Moosic, Pennsylvania, at the age of 19. They have since divorced. Skylar Sophia Rothrock, she has one daughter. She works as a martial arts instructor and co-owns a martial arts studio in Studio City, California, which is part of the Z Ultimate Self Defense Studios chain of martial arts studios.

In the 1980s, she was romantically involved with Hong Kong actor Mang Hoi.

Career

Between 1981 and 1985, Rothrock was World Champion of both forms and weapons five times. These categories are not combat-focused, rather than combating, and they are not sorted into male and female categories, but equally open to both sexes.

In her first 38 tournaments, she finished first in forms 32 times and first place in weapons 12 times, including competing in "Men's Forms" three out of four times as there was no Women's Division. She was the "Grand Master" of five tournaments and finished in first place in four out of five fighting events.

She holds seven black belts and sashes in various Far Eastern martial arts, including Tang Soo Do, Taekwondo (Korean), Eagle Claw (Chinese), Wushu, Ng Ying Kung Fu, and Pai Lum White Dragon Kung Fu. In Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan, she earned her 6th degree black belt. She was first tested by Grand Master Robert Kovaleski, 9th Dan and Chair of the I.T.M.A., and was promoted by him to 7th degree black belt in 2011 and 8th degree black belt in 2015. She is a martial arts instructor, and her favorite weapons are hook swords.

Rothrock was inducted into the Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame in 1983 as "Female Competitor of the Year." She was the first woman to be on the front page of a martial arts magazine, and she co-authored Advanced Dynamic Kicks, with George Chung in 1986. In 2014, she was honoured with the Legacy Award at the Urban Action Showcase & Expo at HBO.

Rothrock was discovered by Golden Harvest in Los Angeles, California, when she was on Ernie Reyes' West Coast Demonstration Team. Yes, Madam (also known as Police Assassins or In the Line of Duty Part 2), which also starred Michelle Yeoh, was two years (1985) later. It was a box office hit. She stayed in Hong Kong until 1988, shooting seven films there. Possibly her first film was 24 Hours to Midnight, a Leo Fong directed film in which also starred Stack Pierce, Juan Chapa, and Bernie Pock.

Rothrock was one of the few western actors to break into genuine filmmaking in Hong Kong before achieving success in their own country. In several Hong Kong films, she was credited as "Fu Lok Law" or "Foo Lok Law." Pierre David, a producer, was responsible for Rothrock's ascension to the United States. In Martial Law, Rothrock's first U.S. film, David gave her a co-starring role with Chad McQueen. She had a fruitful career in B-grade action films for the next ten years. She has worked with China O'Brien and China on several films, including: Honor & Glory, No Retreat, No Surrender 2 and Prince of the Sun.

Bertha Jo in the 1997 television film The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion! She was an inspiration for the Mortal Kombat combat game character Sonya Blade and lent her voice to the animated film Eek the Cat.

In the 1996 episode "Not Fade Away," she appeared in the television series "Hercule Journeys: The Legendary Journeys, playing Hera's second Enforcer.

After appearing in the 2004 film Xtreme Fighter (a.k.a.), I gained a new love for him. She moved from acting to teaching private martial arts lessons at her martial arts studio in Studio City, California, where she appeared on Sally Kirk/The White Dragon.
