Cynthia Johnson (born April 22, 1956) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and producer.
She is best known as the lead singer of the band Lipps Inc.
with the worldwide smash hit "Funkytown".
Musical career
Johnson had been known locally for winning the 1976 Miss Black Minnesota, USA pageant, as well as being the lead vocalist of the well-known Minneapolis band Flyte Tyme for seven years before becoming the lead singer of Lipps Inc. Johnson, a saxophone player, worked with Flyte Tyme, and she was also the songwriter of several of their songs. Today, a multi-Grammy award-winning songwriting and production team co-wrote some songs with band members Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Johnson obtained her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, Morris, in 1978, and went on to perform with Flyte Tyme for a short time. The band developed into The Time, a Prince's side project, just after she left Flyte Tyme.
Johnson, the lead singer of the Minneapolis-based band Lipps Inc., best known for its 1980 hit "Funkytown." The album debuted at No. 1 on the charts. 1 in 28 countries, sold more than 35 million copies around the world, and won a spot in the Rock & Roll Museum's "One-Hit Wonders" section. "Designer Music" and "Rock It" are two other singles, but the group never matched the success of "Funkytown," which continues to have a huge influence on popular culture. The organization received several awards, including three Billboard Music Awards and the AMOA's "Soul Record of the Year." After the group's third album Designer Music was released, Johnson left the band.
Johnson has continued her musical career and is still active as a member of Sounds of Blackness, Maceo Parker and Prince's three-time Grammy Award-winning gospel band Sounds of Blackness, on labels such as Motown and Terry Lewis' albums. She has also worked as a jingle singer on commercials for 3M, Volkswagen, Nissan, Target, FedEx, Ford, and McDonald's. She has also performed for US presidents. Johnson was the host of the first episode of the FunkyTown TV series, produced by Megabien Entertainment, a Minneapolis-based production company.
Johnson continues her career as a solo artist rather than working with others. All That I Am, her debut album, was released on the Megabien Music label on December 15, 2013.
