Douglas Berneville-Claye fought for the SAS and the SS, and he died fighting for them

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 8, 2022
Douglas Berneville-Claye (left with his mother in 1941) served in the Special Air Service in North Africa under its mother, David Stirling, and second in command, Paddy Mayne, from 1942 to 1942. Nevertheless, a recent book reveals how the officer, Douglas Claye, but also added the second part of his surname to raise his kudos, became a traitor after being apprehended by the Germans. Michael Scott explains how, while in captivity, the former SAS soldier joined the British Free Corps (BFC), a German military unit made up of volunteers from Britain, was transferred from Churchill's SAS to Hitler's Waffen-SS. Claye went on to become a member of the Waffen SS. However, the traitor avoided prison for his efforts and emigrated to Australia in the 1950s after being briefly jailed in 1949 for majoramy. He died there in 1975 with his image unblemished. After a 1946 court martial for a'improper relationship' with a female member of the Auxiliary Transport Service, he had been awarded for bravery with British and French medals during the war and also managed to prevent discharge from the army. Margaret Metcalfe, Claye's daughter who was disowned as a child, was horrified as she delves into her father's past. She also learned about his serial bigamy and that he had sired at least ten children.

Stirling's kid is crazy, very mad.' Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's decision on the maverick officer David Stirling, who was trying to recruit Monty's finest troops to join his private army and sneak behind enemy lines to burn up airfields and oil installations, breaking the German and Italian Axis' stranglehold in North Africa. Monty, the discipliner with a resentment of anything that screamed of the dishonest and furtive, kicked him away with a flea in his ear. However, he did have the good grace to admit in private that "in war, there is often a place for mad people." And it was in that context that the SAS, the most popular of all British army units, was established in 1941. Now, those early years are about to be portrayed on our television screens in SAS Rogue Heroes (pictured), a gritty six-part series written by Steven Knight, maker of Peaky Blinders.

The tale of David Stirling's original SAS 'Rogue Heroes' retells in a new BBC drama

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 26, 2022
Rogue Heroes, a BBC drama that was previously unveiled, retells the tale of the Special Air Service's previously-secret origins, which was established in North Africa in 1941 by Lieutenant-Colonel David Stirling (left). Stirling, alongside other key figures such as Paddy Mayne (right), Jock Lewes (center) and Reg Seekings, established a faction that fought back against enemy lines during the Second World War. Hundreds of German and Italian planes were shot and killed in dozens of airbases and crashed hundreds of German and Italian planes. The BBC show depicts true life events that were not revealed in historian Ben Macintyre's 2016 book of the same name. Stirling, who was dubbed by the UK's most senior military officer, is played by Connor Swindells (inset bottom left) in Mayne and Games of Thrones' Alfie Allen (inset centre), depicting Lewes. Before war had even broken out, Mayne was known for his ferocious antics, but SAS's achievement of ripping out the control panel of an enemy aircraft in a single raid has fallen short in SAS legend John Mayne. Lewes was known to perform parachute leaps by leaping from the back of speeding lorries, but SAS intelligence officer Dudley Clarke had been able to establish a false parachute regiment and spread word about it to terrify Italian troops. Clarke is portrayed by Dominic West
