Cliff Bleszinski Life

Cliff Bleszinski (born 1975), also known as CliffyB, is an American video game designer.

He is best known for his contributions to the Unreal and Gears of War games as the former design director for Epic Games and the co-founder of Boss Key Productions.

Personal life

Cliff is married to Lauren Bleszinski (née Berggren), a former professional gamer and id Software programmer, and a id Software engineer. He had been married to Darcy before, but he was never married. Tyler Bleszinski, the site's founder and Vox Media progenitor SB Nation, is one of his brothers. Cliff's father, who died when Cliff was 15 years old, was a Polaroid engineer. When he was a shy child, "some jock kid" gave him derogatorily, and he later adopted it and became a more assertive persona against it. However, in 2008, he expressed a desire to banish the moniker by saying that "time to grow up a bit."

Cliff appeared in the first issue of Nintendo Power in 1988 for winning the highest score in Super Mario Bros, 9,999.950. "It's certainly one of the moments when I realised, deep-down and subconsciously, that I wanted to be a 'name' in this market of video games,'" he said. When he was 15, he finished second in Massachusetts, and he also went to the Nintendo World Championships.

Bleszinski gained notoriety in 1998 when he invited visitors of his website to scan their cats on flatbed scanners and then submit the pictures for judging.

In 2000, PC Gamer named Bleszinski as one of the "Next Game Gods" on the front of its November issue, predicting that he would become a "industrial legend" in the future. In 2007, a Wired magazine named him a Rave Award for his contribution to the Gears of War. On April 12, 2010, he appeared on NBC's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where he introduced Gears of War 3 as the game that first inspired him.

Bleszinski has opened two bars in Raleigh, North Carolina, one in 2014 called The Station and the other in 2015, The Raleigh Beer Garden.

Cliff Bleszinski Career

Career

The Palace of Deceit, Bleszinski's first game, was an adventure game in which he began at the age of 15. Visual Basic's second version came out when he was 16 years old.

After submitting his game Dare to Dream to Epic Games' CEO Tim Sweeney, Bleszinski got his start at Epic Games in 1992. Though Dare to Dream did not have a huge success, Bleszinski was hired by Jazz Jackrabbit, a browser co-developed by demoscene coder Arjan Brussee. Epic's most popular game at the time, with enough money to buy his first apartment and a car. It was also around this time that he joined Sweeney and James Schmalz on what would become Unreal, which would be a sequel to Unreal Tournament and expanded into a series of games.

Bleszinski also worked as a creative consultant on Rune and as lead designer on the first three installments of the Gears of War franchise, which have sold over 22 million copies and earned over $1.5 billion as of January 2014. Gears of War came out of the design of Unreal Warfare, which was to be a game. The game began as another first-person shooter in the Unreal universe, as Bleszinski explained in a speech at GDC 2007 entitled "Designing Gears of War: Iteration Wins." Over time, however, the cover mechanic in Namco's 2003 game Kill Switch and the third-person Resident Evil 4, Unreal Warfare, became the game known as Gears of War.

Cliff Ford, a 20-year employee of Epic Games, announced his departure on October 3, 2012, saying he had been playing video games since childhood and wanted to take a break. In a 2015 interview, his initial intention was to retire permanently. "I honestly thought I was done... Bleszinski told Destructoid, "gaming made him feel jaded as well as working with some really talented people who were also very jaded." "I could pitch the most innovative idea to anyone back when I was at Epic's end, but they'd be like, 'I don't buy it,'" he said.

Cliff announced on Twitter that he was "coming out of retirement to make video games again" and that he would unveil his new project next week. Nexon and his new studio, Boss Key Productions, which he co-founded with Brussee the same year, will launch BlueStreak, a free-to-play, PC-focused arena shooter coded BlueStreak. Bleszinski revealed that the arena shooter would be named LawBreakers a year later.

Hideo Kojima, vice president of Konami Digital Entertainment, gave Cliff Bleszinski a chance to work on the Silent Hill franchise. On Twitter, he wrote, "I was flattered but declined." He joined Fig, a mixed crowd-funding/investment platform for video games, in May 2016.

Bleszinski announced the dissolution of Boss Key Productions on May 14, 2018, citing poor sales.

Bleszinski has been involved with theater performance after Boss Key's closing. He invested and co-produced Hadestown and hopes to be involved in Frankie and Johnny's revival in the Clair de Lune. He also wants to publish a memoir of his gaming career, comparing his experience to Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. He has also expressed interest in returning to the Gears of War as an advisor.
