Clay Matthews Jr. Career

Professional career

Matthews was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 12th pick in the first round of the 1978 NFL Draft. Matthews was a four-time pick for the Pro Bowl with the Browns and was a pillar of the defense for over a decade. Matthews received 12.0 sacks in 1984. He appeared at several important Browns playoff losses (1981), The Fumble (1988), and The Drive (1988), which barred those Browns teams from ever going to the Super Bowl. On January 6, 1990, Browns' most memorable game as a Brown was in a playoff match against the Bills. Matthews intercepted a pass by Bill Kelly to seal a Cleveland victory with just seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and Bills at the Browns' two-yard line. Matthews was signed by the Atlanta Falcons in 1993 after the 1993 season. Matthews played all 16 games for the Falcons in 1995 and set a record as the oldest player to experience a sack at the age of 40 years, 282 days old.

On the Cleveland Browns, Matthews was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week twice (Week 12, 1984 and 1991). Matthews and his brother, Clay Matthews III, are the only father-son team to be named Defensive Player of the Week in the NFL.
