Claire Keane (born March 1, 1979) is an illustrator and computer animator who contributed to the Disney films Enchanted, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen.
She is the niece of Disney animator Glen Keane and the niece of cartoonist Bil Keane, creator of the comic strip The Family Circus and Thelma Keane.
Early life
Keane grew up in California until she and her family immigrated to France at the age of 16. At the American School of Paris and the Parsons School of Design's Paris outpost. Keane has since attended the École supérieure des arts graphiques in Paris. She was inspired to work as a graphic designer. However, she found that she loved designing and exploring pictures and stories. Glen Keane's father was just beginning to tell her that they'd soon need a graphic designer. Keane and her husband migrated to Los Angeles, where she spent ten years designing for Tangled, Frozen, and Enchanted among other Disney Feature Animation films. She left 2012 to work for herself. Last year, Keane's first children's book Once Upon A Cloud came out in 2015, and her second book, Little Big Girl, was published in the fall of 2016.
Career
Keane's work spanned the film's technical development, but her art was certainly most prominent as the murals the character Rapunzel paints on her house's wall. For these, Keane hand painted the mural on a wall in the Walt Disney Animation Studios' art department. Rapunzel's Amazing Hair, Keane's, was also illustrated in the Disney storybook. In 2020, she received an Emmy Award for her role on Tangled The Series.
Keane was assisting Enchanted with costume designer Mona May to help with Giselle's costumes. In 2013, Keane left Disney to concentrate on writing and illustrating children's books. Once Upon A Cloud, Kirkus Reviews' first illustrated children's book, reveals her experience with Disney. The illustrations on Little Big Girl have a "retro" feel to them.
Keane's illustrations, according to the Cape Cod Times, are a good match for Diane Adams' book Love Is.
