Chuck Person Life

Chuck Connors (born June 28, 1964) is an American former basketball player and mentor.

Person was the 1987 NBA Rookie of the Year for 14 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Person played basketball at Auburn University and was selected fourth overall in the 1986 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers, for whom he played six seasons.

He has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, Charlotte Hornets, and Seattle SuperSonics.

Person was embroiled in a college recruitment fiasco and pleaded guilty to a bribery charge, and his 17-year coaching career came to an end.

Personal life

He is the older brother of former NBA player Wesley Person. He was married to Carmen Person. Chuck Jr. is the father of two daughters, Millicent and Tiffany, as well as one son, Mark Jr.

After being arrested by a federal grand jury on six criminal charges: bribes and gratuities, plan to commit honest services fraud, scheme to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and travel act conspiracy, after reportedly receiving kickbacks for steering student athletes to financial executives, a person was arrested by federal law enforcement on September 25, 2017 in Alabama. The day after his arrest and was fired by Auburn University on November 7, 2017, he was suspended without compensation. The Southern District of New York's Attorney's Office had convicted several others on graft charges at the same time.

On March 19, 2019, a person pled guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit bribery; as part of the plea bargain, the individual forfeited $91,500. On July 17, 2019, United States District Judge Loretta A. Preska sentenced a person to two years of probation and 200 hours of community service, finding that "no purpose can be fulfilled by incarceration" and quoting the individual's long history of giving charity. Person expressed regret for using bribes to guide college students to a financial advisor who turned out to be a government informant at the sentencing hearing. Prosecutors denied the evidence that Person was motivated by "insatiable envy" and described the individual as "charitable to a fault" during the sentencing hearing; she told him, "Keep up the good work."

Chuck Person Career

Professional career

Person was chosen fourth in the 1986 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers; the small forward received the Rookie of the Year award in 1987 and spent six seasons with Indiana. In 1988, a person with a career-high 21.6 points was average. During his NBA career, he was known as "The Rifleman" due to his 3-point shooting ability and the fact that he was named after Chuck Connors, the star of the television series The Rifleman. Sam Mitchell and Pooh Richardson were traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1993, as well as Micheal Williams.

Person with the Timberwolves was active for only two seasons. In 1993–94, he had an average of 11.6 points per year.

From 1994 to 1998, a person played for the San Antonio Spurs. His nickname, "Rifleman," was appropriate, as he not only set the NBA season record for three-pointers set during the 1994–95 season (that was surpassed by Phoenix Suns' Mirza Teletovia) but also set the Spurs' season record for three-pointers at 190 feet during the 1995–96 season (a record that stood until Danny Green tied it in 2014–15). Person was out of the entire 1996–97 season due to injury.

Before retiring from the NBA in 2000, the person appeared with the Charlotte Hornets (1999) and Seattle SuperSonics for one season.

Post-playing career

Since Person was traded from Seattle to the Lakers (even though he had already decided to retire) in 2000, he joined Cleveland Cavaliers head coach John Lucas as an assistant for the 2000–01 NBA season.

He served as a player-relations assistant and scout for the Pacers' front office from January 2003 to July 2005, when he transitioned to an assistant-coaching role within the organization. He applied unsuccessfully for both the Pacers' and the Sacramento Kings' open head coaching positions in 2007.

In 2007, someone became an assistant coach for Sacramento, but he departed the Kings after head coach Reggie Theus was fired in mid-December 2008.

Person was interviewed for the Chicago Bulls' head-coaching job after his first season with the Kings, but not able to be hired.

Person returned to Brantley, Alabama, in 2008, after 23 years of playing, administrating, and teaching.

In 2009, he was invited to assist Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson as his assistant. He applied for the head coaching position for the men's team at Auburn University in March 2010, but he wasn't happy, despite encouraging feedback. Since being fired by the Lakers after the interview, he returned to his position. Mike D'Antoni, the head coach of the Lakers, took over from Mike Brown in the middle of the 2012–2013 season and retained all of Brown's employees, including Person. However, the individual was suspended after the season; he was the last surviving member of Jackson's Lakers staff.

Person joined the coaching staff in South Korea as an associate head coach for the Jeonju KCC Egis in the Korean Basketball League in the summer of 2013.

Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl recruited Person as an assistant coach on April 7, 2014. He was promoted to associate head coach in May 2015 and was one of the best assistant coaches and recruiters in the country before his capture and subsequent release in September 2017 as part of the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball corruption scandal.
