How a snub over a box at the OPERA tore Manhattan high society apart: When nouveau-riche scion William Vanderbilt's $1m bid for seats at the 'old money' favorite was rejected, he exacted his revenge in a gloriously petty way

The newly wealthy tycoon families founded The Metropolitan Opera after being refused from New York society's highest echelons by old money families. The Academy of Music, the old favorite, was defunct within three years. It was the start of the opera season, but the building was demolished. The Opera Wars are on HBO in the second season of The Gilded Age, and although the plot is rooted in history and a conflict that rocked high society as the wealthy New York families of old, including Astors, Livingstons and Schermerhorns, battled to keep the Vanderbilts' names out of their cloistered cliques.

Cynthia Nixon returns for series two of HBO's The Gilded Age with her character Ada Brook set to 'surprise everyone' in new storyline

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 3, 2023
Cynthia Nixon has had a string of doomed love affairs on film. First and foremost, there was her love with Che in And Just Like That, which caused her to offend Sex And The City franchisees and to come to an end. And now comes another unexpected entanglement, this time in Downton Abbey's second series of Sky Atlantic drama The Gilded Age, written by Julian Fellowes. The actress, 57, portrays Ada, the downtrodden, 'kind but not clever' younger sister of Agnes, who married well and is worth a fortune in the show, which takes place in New York in the 1880s.

In season two of hit show A war of fortune: how New York's richest dynasties were practically shattered by a fierce competition between old and new, as HBO's The Gilded Age plans to lay bare the socialite families' petty feuds and overspending

In 1880s New York, season two of HBO's hit period drama, The Gilded Age, depicts a tug-of-war between old and new money. As the latter is refusing to attend the illustrious Academy of Music, the competition between Caroline Astor and Bertha Russell (a fictionalized version of Alva Vanderbilt) hits fever pitch. Vanderbilt leads the construction of a new opera house that surpasses the old Academy in importance and grandeur based on true events. The Metropolitan Opera opened in 1883 and is still a fixture of New York City today.

Gene Hackman, 93, is enjoying his retirement in New Mexico

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 10, 2023
Gene Hackman, a repressed actor, enjoyed his retirement in New Mexico this week when he opted for a quick food lunch (left and right). As he bought lunch at a Wendy's drive-thru, the two-time Oscar winner, 93 (pictured inset with his Best Supporting Actor award for 1992's Unforgiven), looked healthy and well-presented. It was a rare sighting of the actor in the 2004 comedy Welcome To Mooseport, alongside Ray Romano and Christine Baranski. Larry King conducted a rare interview on July 7th, in which he revealed that no new film projects had been lined up and that his acting career was over. While promoting his third book, Escape From Andersonville, in 2008, he revealed his resignation years later.

On television in 2022, JACI STEPHEN's no-nonsense attack on absurd flops, fashion fiascos, and fan favorites took on illogical flops, fashion fauxpastes, and fan favorites

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 30, 2022
STEPHEN: Were these shows merely a reaction to the previous two years, when Covid dominated almost every channel and we just craved escapism? When almost all we could rely on during that terrible time was good old Hallmark for continuing to keep us distracted with nonsensical murders and women in advertising who inexplicably moved to a forest and found the only straight available man in the state? It was still Netflix's year - and they win the bulk of my awards, both good and bad, with a variety of themes ranging from the absurd to the sublime. It was a mixed bag on other channels - extraordinary shows, tedious ones, and others so bad you could only sit back and wonder at human imagination's limits.

The Fall's best and worst TV shows are reviewed by JACI STEPHEN

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 1, 2022
This is life. Audiences can't get enough of it. If it's because their own lives don't match up to the dramatic drama of what they see on television or they crave escapism, one thing is even more apparent during this year's TV fall season: reality is amazing. Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, based on the serial killer and cannibal's (real) life, became the most watched series in Netflix's history. In a short time, it was knocked off its pedestal by The Watcher, another real-life drama based on the lives of a family that migrated to New Jersey, but only to be the victims of a horrific stalker. The more gruesome and sinister the topic is, the more audiences seem to be craving it.

See the complete winners list for 2022: The Golden Globes were compiled in 2022

www.mtv.com, January 9, 2022
To say that the Golden Globe Awards this year are a little different this year would be an understatement. The show had traditionally started with a celebrity-filled ceremony from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, which was broadcast live on NBC. However, after a string of scandals dogged the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, including an internal lack of diversity and a variety of unethical business practices, NBC dropped the 2022 telecast, leaving the Globes without a television home. The winners will be announced online by the Golden Globes account on Thursday when the ceremony takes place tonight (January 9).
