Professional career
Van Heerden began his professional career in 2006. He quickly established himself as Africa's best fighter, earning his fame by winning the South African and ABU welterweight titles. Nonetheless, he lost his first match in the professional ring to Serbian Ivica Stevanovic for the IBF InterContinental Light Middleweight Championship in 2010. Despite this, he did not prevent him from achieving his fame. He triumphed over fellow South African Kaizer Mabuza in 2009 and gained the IBO welterweight belt.
