Chris Sparling (born March 21, 1977) is an American screenwriter, producer, and actor from Providence, Rhode Island.
He is married to Kerri Morrone Sparling, the author of the diabetes blog Six Until Me.
Career
Sparling found mainstream success when he was commissioned by producer Peter Safran to write, direct, and produce several low-budget independent films after graduating from Roger Williams University and Bridgewater State University with degrees in Criminal Justice, as well as producing several low-budget independent films. On the project, Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés and actor Ryan Reynolds appeared. The film premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival to high critical acclaim and was eventually sold to Lionsgate Films. It was released in September 2010 after winning the Méliès d'Or Award at the Sitges Film Festival and then touring additional film festivals around the world, including the Toronto International Film Festival. In January 2011, the film was subsequently released on DVD. The 2010 National Board of Review for Buried rated Sparling as the best Original Screenplay, and the film was selected as one of the Top Independent Films of 2010. In 2011, he received the Goya Award for Best Original Screenplay, and he was also nominated for a Gaudi Award in the same category.
Sparling wrote the script ATM, a suspense thriller directed by Peter Safran and shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Manitoba, fall 2010 and was released in 2012 by IFC Films. He also wrote Reincarnate for producer M. Night Shyamalan, the second film in a three-part series called The Night Chronicles.
Sparling was recruited by Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio in 2014 to produce the crime novel Blood on Snow, written by author Jo Nesb. Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, and Ken Watanabe star Kenney McNonaughey, Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe, and Gus Van Sant produced The Sea of Trees, his first screenplay, in the same year.
In its November 2014 issue, Variety named Sparling one of "Top Screenwriters to Watch" for the second time. Anchor Bay Films released Sparling's horror-thriller film The Atticus Institute, which he both wrote and directed, two months later. The film was released in the United States by Universal Pictures. Mercy, Netflix's directorial sequel, was released in 2016.
He later wrote the 2020 film Greenland, which opened at number one at the box office in 26 countries and received rave reviews from observers. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin appear in the film, which was directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Greenland: Migration, which was announced at the 2021 Cannes Film Market, will also be a sequel. Two films he both wrote and produced, The Desperate Hour starring Naomi Watts, and directed by Phillip Noyce, and Intrusion, a Netflix Original starring Frieda Pinto, were released in 2021.
