ADRIAN THRILLS: The last two Foo Fighters albums have been a case of business as usual - bruising, escapist rock and roll with a sense of fun and a keen eye for a good hook. Both Concrete And Gold and 2021's Covid-Delayed Medicine At Midnight captured an American rock band playing pop. It wasn't broken, so Dave Grohl, a guitarist, felt no need to fix it. But here We Are is cut from very different cloth. The band's 11th album, which came at the time of Taylor Hawkins' sudden death in March 2022, is a raw reflection on death and grief. As such, it considers not only death but also the circle of life, the ties that bind, and the healing power of music. 'I had a person I loved and, just like that, I was left homeless without him,' Grohl on The Glass, a versatile rock number pitched in Foos style between his old band, Nirvana (for whom he was the drummer), and the Beatles' jangle. 'Think I'm getting over it, but there is no way to get around it,' he says on Under You. If Grohl's lyrics are representative, the song is anything but.
