Chris Moyles Career

Early life and career

Moyles was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, Christopher Moyles, as a postman and housewife Hannah Veronica "Vera" Moyles, (from Dublin), and he was educated at Mount St Mary's Catholic High School. He began his radio broadcasting work at WBHS (Wakefield's Broadcast to Hospital Services Service), a volunteer-staffed hospital radio station in the West Yorkshire city while attending school.

Moyles served as an assistant for DJ Carl Kingston at WBHS and then moved to Aire FM as an assistant. He served as a host on Radio Top Shop in Leeds's Briggate branch during this period. He began hosting his own Evening Show on Aire FM (and occasionally serving as a stand-in host), and then worked as a host at Radio Luxembourg until it was shut down in 1992.

He began working at the Pulse of West Yorkshire in 1993, hosting the evening show from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm. He stayed there until early 1994, when he was banned for remarks regarding the station's previous program controller. Moyles then appeared at Signal 1 in Stoke-on-Trent, presenting The Evening Bit from 7.00 p.m. He remained there until being fired by the station's program manager, who referred to him as a "spineless bastard" in his first autobiography. Moyles appeared on the Chiltern Radio Network in 1995, presenting the evening show from 7.00 pm to 1.00 p.m. before proceeding to the late show from 10.00 p.m. On Horizon Radio, Chiltern Radio, Severn Sound, and Northants 96, this show was simulcast.

In 1996, Moyles appeared on Capital FM in London, hosting his weekend show 'The Late Bit', which went out on a Friday and Saturday evening, as well as covering for other DJs. Moyles and fellow DJ 'Doctor' Neil Fox were knocked out in Capital. Moyles joined Radio 1 in July 1997 after losing the opportunity to host the breakfast show on rival station Kiss 100.
