There is a fleeting moment when these glacial rivers are often at their lowest flow rate where the sandbars between glacial runoff becomes so pronounced that large flocks of birds will gather on them. I’ve only seen it a few times during late fall/ early winter where almost thousands of white specks dot these sandbars. I love seeking out these rare moments that feel very finite - I remember seeing a ragnaraxelsson photo similar to this in black & white and it blew me away. I had always felt inspired to find this moment. 2 ) At home in California I often find myself drawn to the local dunes after a wind event where patterns form.. these seem best in the fall season where precipitation can come after wind nearly cementing these patterns. A few moments from behind the scenes while shooting my new film with restorehetchhetchy & jamesqmartin - Finding Hetch Hetchy. Yosemite Valley is widely known as the epicenter of American climbing. Its sister valley to the north has long sat in the shadows of Yosemite’s reputation. The Hetch Hetchy Valley - home to similar towering granite walls and the majesty of the Sierras, stays well out of the limelight despite being part of the National Park. With years of controversy surrounding the valley and a complicated relationship between the western US & water usage, this film provides a snapshot into that story. Follow veteran Yosemite climber timmyoneill as he discovers the beauty and conflict of this stunning valley. Watch the film at the link in my bio. 2,238,899 photos were submitted to natgeo this year and 49 were chosen for “Pictures of the YEAR” I am absolutely honored and thrilled to have one of those chosen photos from the recent Iceland Volcanic eruption assignment. This was definitely a right time, right place scenario as I was working completely solo and my team had just left Iceland with most my camera gear. It’s rare I find myself shooting alone these days and witj minimal equipment. I had 1 camera body and 2 lenses + drone. I thought differently as i only had 1 memory card and limited batteries. It forced me to think back to shooting film and or being very selective with what I shot. There was a real purity to this assignment for me that I loved, I pulled an all nighter soaking up wifi from a local coffee shop to send the files while uploading images straight from camera & drone with no card reader. Maybe none of this makes sense to you.. but as a pro that takes pride in having a seamless system and being dialed with gear and equipment- this put me back into a very humbled scrappy state for such a big assignment. To walk away with this honor from that shoot feels extra special. check it online or in the newest Nat Geo Posted by @chrisburkard on Nov 24, 2022 10:27PM

Finding Hetch Hetchy - my new film with jamesqmartin & restorehetchhetchy following timmyoneill as he discovers the beauty & conflict of the sister valley to Yosemite. Home to towering granite walls, Hetch Hetchy often stays out of the limelight despite being part of Yosemite National Park, due to the controversy surrounding the reservoir sourcing a large part of San Francisco’s water supply. So grateful to be a part of this project and that we got to work with Chelsea Walsh before her tragic passing. You can find the full film at the link in my bio. lucho_rivera Posted by @chrisburkard on Nov 22, 2022 10:52PM
