Christopher Frank Atton (born 10 March 1959) is Professor of Media and Culture in Edinburgh Napier University's School of Arts and Creative Industries.

Alternative Media's work has honed on the assumption that alternative media not as an essentialized political position but rather as a series of socio-cultural events that redraw the boundaries of expertise and media control.

Popular music, the creative economy, infoshops, and teaching and learning in higher education are among his research interests.

Atton has also written on censorship and media ethics.

Education

Atton received his PhD in 1999 with a study of the British alternative press; he also holds an MA (Hons) in Latin Studies from the University of Edinburgh and a Masters in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester.

Chris Atton Career

Academic career

Atton began life as a translator of Renaissance Latin texts before completing a library in Leeds in 1985. He was appointed Science Librarian at Edinburgh Napier University in 1992 after many years of working in public and college libraries. In 1995, he was named a Fellow of the Library Association (UK) and was given the American Library Association's Jackie Eubanks Memorial Award 'in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of alternative media in libraries'. Atton was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2007 and appointed Professor in the School of Arts and Creative Industries in October 2008. In 2010, he was accepted to the Peer Review College of the Arts and Humanities Council.
