Personal life
DeBarge was stabbed by South Philadelphia Italian mafioso John "Johnny Gongs" Casasanto in 2003, while touring in a Philadelphia nightclub due to an altercation with one of his associates. The stab wound was within inches of his kidneys and lungs.
In California, DeBarge was arrested for drug use in 2007 and later went to recovery. He confessed to heroin, cocaine, and prescription drugs in 2009, and based his album, appropriately named Addiction, on his opioid use.
DeBarge was arrested in California again in November 2019 for drug use.
Dontae, DeBarge's oldest son, was killed in a stabbing attack in the Van Nuys neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, at the age of 35 on April 2, 2020.

Recording career
In the mid-1980s, he began a musical career of his own with Motown. In 1986, his debut self-titled album was released and featured the hit song "Talk To Me" (#21 US, #7 R&B). The album debuted at #90 on the Billboard 200 and launched "The Girl Next Door," a R&B charting success that debuted on the R&B chart.
"I've Been Watching You" (#18 R&B) plus the title track and album two years later (#53 R&B). However, he was arrested on drug charges just a few weeks after and served time in jail for drug trafficking.
DeBarge returned to Motown in the mid-1990s to continue his musical career under the auspices of Kedar Massenberg and his neo-soul pioneering label imprint Kedar Entertainment. Long Time No See's third album Long Time No Seeler was unveiled on November 18, 1997 to critical acclaim, and it was preceded by the single "Iggin' Me" which received substantial airplay. "Love Always Love" (a collaboration with Joe) and "Virgin" (#18 R&B Airplay) are two additional singles from the album: "Love Still Great" (#97 R&B) and "Virgin" (#97 R&B). In the 1998 romantic comedy film Woo starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Tommy Davidson, a non-album single "Superman" was released. The R&B's top "superman" reached its highest position on the R&B charts at #55.
The Game's fourth album was released on October 26, 1999 and peaked at #41 on the Billboard 200. He had one of his biggest hits (#71 US, #11 R&B) to date, with a remix starring rapper Trina. "Listen To Your Man," the R&B chart's best-selling artist, reuniting him with R&B singer Joe), debuted at #41 on the R&B chart and at #33 on the R&B Airplay Chart, soaring him with R&B singer Joe). "Play a Hater," a third single (that did not appear on the album), was released in 2000.
He later moved to Koch Records, where he launched his Free in 2003 (which peaked at #43 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart). It included the single "Home Alone" which attracted some airplay. On December 17, 2002, DeBarge's first single "Not 2 Gether" was released.
