Education

Chetan Bhagat earned a degree in mechanical engineering and then pursued PGP from IIT Delhi. He began his writing after a few years but decided against it. He has written ten novels and three non-fiction books. Five Point Someone, his first book, was published in 2004.

Early life

Chetan Bhagat grew up in Naraina Vihar, West Delhi, in a traditional Punjabi Hindu family. His father served in the Indian Army as a lieutenant colonel, and his mother worked as a scientist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi. He was educated at the Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan. At 15, he appears to have been a normal student.

Bhagat obtained a B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1995, a 9+ pointer.

Bhagat completed a master's of Business Administration degree in Marketing from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), in 1997. In June 2018, the IIMA named him "Young Alumni Achiever's Awards 2018" in the Art & Entertainment category.

Five of Chetan Bhagat's books have been turned into Bollywood films such as Hello in 2008 (based on One Night @ the Call Center), 3 Idiots in 2009 (based on Five Point Someone), Kai Po Che! In 2013 (based on The 3 Mistakes of My Life), 2 States in 2014 (based on his book of the same name) and Half Girlfriend in 2017 (based on his novel of the same name). Bhagat has also written scripts for Bollywood films like Kick in 2014 and told his stories for the film Kai Po Che! Half-Gird and the Half Girlfriend. For Kai Po Che, Bhagat received the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay. In 2014, he was honoured at the 59th Filmfare Awards. He is also entangled in controversies on Twitter. On October 8, 2021, his new book 400 Days, which is based on a missing child and forbidden love, was published.

Bhagat was welcomed onto Peregrine Investments Holdings in canda after graduating with a master's degree in business administration in 1998. However, Bhagat lost this position within six months after the firm ceased operations in 1998. At their Hong Kong office, his next job was as an investment banker. Despite being dissatisfied with his boss, he carried on and kept this manager in mind when he portrayed the villain in his second book One Night @ the Call Center. Bhagat spent the bulk of his time at the Goldman Sachs office in writing, completing, revising drafts of his first book, Five Point Someone. Rupa Publications accepted his book for two years and offered to publish it.

Bhagat joined Goldman Sachs and left Bank of England in a letter. He was vice president of Strategic Wealth Group, Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong, by 2006. One Night @ the Call Center, his second book, was released in 2005 and became a best-seller. Bhagat and his wife and three-year-old twin sons returned to India in March 2008. In Kodak House, Mumbai, he joined as a director in Deutsche Bank's distressed-assets group. The 3 Mistakes of My Life, his third book, was published in the same year and sold seven lakh (700,000) copies in three months.

He left his banking career to write full-time in 2009.

Bhagat has also appeared in over 1000 cities around the world as a popular motivational speaker.

Five of his novels have been turned into films. Bhagat argued that the film's designers did not give him proper credit for the film 3 Idiote, which was based on his book Five Point Someone). Bhagat, one of the four screenplay writers, was based on his book The 3 Mistakes of My Life, which was based on his book The 3 Mistakes of My Life. The film was a commercial success, and Bhagat, along with Pubali Chaudri, Supratik Sen and Abhishek Kapoor won the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay for Kai Po Che! At the 68th Filmfare Awards.
