Chet Lemon Life

Chester Earl Lemon (born February 12, 1955) is a former Major League outfielder. He grew up in Los Angeles and was a native of Jackson, Mississippi.

He was drafted in the first round of the 1972 Major League Baseball draft and spent 16 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, 1976 to 1989, as well as the Detroit Tigers from 1982 to 1990.

He was selected as an American League All-Star in 1978, 1979, and 1984, and he was the starting center fielder for the 1984 Detroit Tigers team, which captured the 1984 World Series. Lemon was known as one of the best defensive center field fielders in baseball from 1977 to 1987.

He led the American League in 1977 with 512 outfield putouts, his fourth highest single-season tally and the most since 1951.

In four other years (1979 and 1983-1985), he had over 400 outfield putouts.

He played for 44 doubles in 1979 and led the American League in times struck by pitch four times, including a career-high 20 HBP in 1983.

Lemon was occasionally chastised for failing to protest "The Star-Spangled Banner" due to his religious convictions as a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Early years

Lemon was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and when he was six months old, he moved to Los Angeles. His family moved to Los Angeles, where he grew up. He attended John C. Fremont High School, where he competed with Ricky Bell on the football team and also starred on the baseball team.

Personal life

Lemon was married to Valerie Jones and was married. They had four children, Geneva (born 1972), Chester Jr. (born 1977), and Marcus (born 1988). Both David and Marcus followed their father into baseball. Marcus played minor league baseball from 2006 to 2017.

Lemon was divorced from his first wife in 1990. In the early 1990s, Gigi Partee married Gigi Partee. Brianna was their daughter who was born in 1998.

When playing in the minor leagues in the 1970s, Lemon became a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Jerry Hairston Sr. introduced him to the faith while working in the Chicago White Sox organization as a teammate. Lemon declined to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner" because of his religious convictions, a position for which he was often chastised.

In a 1987 interview, Lemon explained:

Lemon founded the Chet Lemon Baseball Academy in Lake Mary, Florida, in 1993. In Eustis, Florida, he coached two successful AAU teams, Chet Lemon's Juice (18 and under) and Chet Lemon's Juice II (14 and under). He served as the head coach for Eustis High School, where he led the Panthers to the 2003 state championship.
