Roberto Gómez Bolaos (21 February 1929 – October 28, 2014), more commonly known as "Lespirito" or "Little Shakespeare," was a Mexican screenwriter, actor, comedian, film producer, film editor, director, playwright, singer, and author.

He is best known for writing, directing, and starring in the Chespirito (1970–1973, 1980–1995), El Chavo del Ocho (1973–1979) television series, and El Chapuln Colorado (1973–1979), which is widely known as the most influential Spanish-language humorist of all time.

El Chavo's character is one of the most iconic in Latin American television history, and El Chavo del Ocho's uncle, Juanita, is also a celebrity, with daily viewership approaching 91 million viewers per episode.

Early life

On Thursday, Roberto Gómez Bolaos was born in Mexico City at 8:00 a.m. (13:00 GMT) on Thursday, February 21. 1929. He was Francisco Gómez Linares, a painter and illustrator who died at the age of 41 in 1935. Elsa Bolaos Aguilar, a bilingual secretary who died at the age of 66 in 1968, has pancreatic cancer. Elsa was the youngest child of Ramón Bolacho, a military doctor, and his Zacatecas-born mother, Mara Aguilar. Bolaos was a first cousin deposed of President of Mexico from 1964 to 1970, according to his mother. Gustavo D'az Ordaz was the president of Mexico. He had an older brother named Francisco (1926–2010), a younger brother named Horacio Gómez Bolaos, who portrayed the role of Godnez in El Chavo del Ocho, and an even older half brother who was involved in one of his father's affairs with another woman.

Before becoming an actor, Gómez was an amateur boxer. He studied mechanical engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), but he never came to practice this profession. Before becoming well-known, he wrote a number of plays, contributed to Mexican film and television scripts, and gained some character-acting work. His stage name, "Chespirit," was derived from William Shakespeare's Spanish phonetic transcription "Chespir" paired with "ito," a diminutive commonly used in Spain due to his short stature. He dedicated himself to writing scripts for "Comedians and Songs" and "El estudio de Pedro Vargas," the two programs with the most devoted audience in Mexico between 1960 and 1965.

Chespirito was discovered as an actor while waiting in line to apply for a job as a writer; within a few years, he began writing and acting in his children's comedies. Los Supergenios de la Mesa Cuadrada, a sketch comedy performance that premiered in 1968, starred Ramón Valdés, Mara Antonieta de las Nieves, and Rubén Aguirre; the film premiered in 1968. Los Supergenios was later renamed Chespirito y la Mesa Cuadrada and later Chespiritito. On this show (1972, 1970, and 1968 respectively), El Chavo, El Chapuln Colorado, and Dr. Chapatn were among the characters.

El Chavo del Ocho and El Chapuln Colorado were two of his best known roles. Both series premiered in 1973 and were based on a sketch of Los Supergenios' same name. The shows were produced by Mexican television network Televisa and broadcast in 124 countries. The short-lived La Chicharra in 1979 and a second version of Chespirito from 1980 to 1995 were among the other shows directed and starring Chespirito.

Chespirito, an 8-year-old boy who often took refuge inside a wooden rain barrel in a Mexican neighborhood, and El Chapuln Colorado he played a good-hearted superhero who is often found in comedic situations. Since seeing El Chapuln Colorado in a motel on the US-Mexico border, Simpsons creator Matt Groening has said he created the Bumblebee Man character.

El Chavo and El Chapuln Colorado have become cultural icons in Latin America and have aired in many nations around the world.

Roberto Gomez Bolanos was also known as a writer. He began writing music as a hobby, and the bulk of his early musical output was devoted to his comedies, as shown in occasional Chapul's or Chavo del Ocho special episodes. The theme songs for several Mexican films and telenovelas, such as Alguna Vez Tendremos Alas and La Duea, were among the later works. He is also the creator of Once y Doce (Eleven and Twelve), Mexico's most popular theater comedy; it is also performed occasionally.
