Was Charlie Chaplin's grave once robbed?

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
Yes, his coffin was stolen and held for ransom. In 1952 Charlie Chaplin paid a visit to Britain only to find that the U.S. attorney general had revoked his visa (he had never obtained U.S. citizenship) because of alleged Communist sympathies. Incensed, Chaplin vowed never to set foot in the U.S. again. He settled in Switzerland and died there on Christmas Day 1977 in the town of Corsier-sur-Vevey on the banks of Lake Geneva. One morning early in 1978, the local cemetery worker made a startling discovery: a muddy hole where Chaplin's coffin should have been. The Press speculated that a group of neo-Nazis, rabid anti-Semites or a crazed Englishman who wanted to repatriate Chaplin were responsible. Within a few days, the motive was revealed. The coffin was offered for a ransom of 600,000 Swiss francs.

As Prince Harry embraced his wife after winning a charity polo match in Florida on Friday he had more than one reason to celebrate. Less than 24 hours earlier, the Sussexes unveiled two new projects for streaming giant Netflix - a 'cooking and lifestyle' show for Meghan and, most intriguingly, a series about polo hosted by Harry which, it was claimed, 'will provide viewers with unprecedented access to the world of professional polo'. A statement released by Archewell Productions - the company set up by the couple in 2020 after they quit as senior royals and signed a reported £80 million five-year deal with Netflix - declared: 'Known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene, the series will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level.'

How thieves recovered £1.3 million worth of fine wines from a top Paris restaurant that hosts the world's top celebrities. The Nazis were also barred from entering the cellar, which has a metal-lined cellar

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 4, 2024
The wine cellar of La Tour d'Argent (top right), the oldest restaurant in Paris, is so popular that only customers who order the most expensive vintages or otherwise 'prove their interest' are allowed a guided tour. Members of the restaurant's fortunate few are then led into the restaurant's bowels by a member of staff wearing white tie and tails who chimes a copper bell to announce the visitor's arrival to the security men who guard its property round the clock. They are met with a warren of 27 rooms containing more than 300,000 bottles worth £21 million per capita. The 25,000 most valuable bottles, which are all priced at £250 to $800, are stored in a separate area on the first floor of the cellar, which has walls reinforced with battleship-grade metal to discourage any thieves tunnelling in, and no one - not even the head sommelier - is allowed inside alone.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Princess Diana's 'favourite' London restaurant Le Caprice defies rival by reopening

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 31, 2024
DEN CONFIDENTIAL: Richard Caring (left), a member of the City of Clubs, did not reopen the London dining room Le Caprice after Covid lockdowns, think he had pulled off a clever trick by getting a lease on the property, which is just around the corner from The Ritz. However, Caring is planning to cock a snook at King by reopening Le Caprice in a new location. Since Caring still owns Le Caprice, his restaurant will be named Le Caprice. I can say that Caring is in talks to reopen Le Caprice at The Chancery Rosewood, the $1 billion hotel and leisure renovation of the former US Embassy building in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair. The hotel, which is owned by Qatari Diar, is scheduled to open next year. It's going to be interesting to see who will go to Le Caprice and who will go to the old 'Caprice,' a source tells me. When it was on 20 Arlington Street, Princess Diana (right, at the restaurant in 1994) was one of the regular diners at Le Caprice.

Who has played the most different characters in the same film?

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 23, 2024
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: Alec Guinness played eight characters in the 1949 film Kind Hearts And Coronets. He took on the roles of all eight members of a ducal family that must be bumped off by relative Louis D'Ascoyne Mazzini, who is determined on becoming the Duke. In the 1996 film The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy portrays seven members of the Klump family. The Guinness World Record for 'the most characters played by one actor in a single film' goes to Aaranu Njan, which is a 2017 Indian film. Johnson George is one of history's most popular characters, including Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Leonardo da Vinci, Charlie Chaplin, and Che Guevara. Nevertheless, this film is marginally more than a home-made film.

STEPHEN GLOVER: It's no wonder ITV's Post Office drama has so caught the public's imagination - every one of us knows the misery of being at the mercy of obdurate organisations and their maddening computer systems

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 11, 2024
STEPHEN GLOVER: Why has one drama on ITV generated so much outrage about mistreated sub-postmasters? No doubt that it's because Mr Bates Vs. The Post Office made people feel sorry for them. Human sympathies were sparked. However, it goes deeper than that. Although most of us - thank God - aren't persecuted by a brutal and faceless bureaucracy, we can relate to those Post Office workers' experiences. We get a glimpse of ourselves in their predicament.

Review of Napoleon's film: Joaquin Phoenix's film portraying the tyrannical French emperor is an epic that rivals Waterloo, writes BRIAN VINER

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 15, 2023
Brian Viner: Many great filmmakers have attempted to address Napoleon Bonaparte's life while also being thwarted by the company's overwhelming size. Charlie Chaplin and Stanley Kubrick were both defeated, and Sir Ridley Scott was defeated, as well. His most recent epic is full of delights. Some of the battle scenes are truly breathtaking, and Vanessa Kirby is portrayed admirably as the beguiling Josephine, Napoleon's second greatest love, after himself. However, Joaquin Phoenix in the title role puts on an enigmatic, mumbling appearance that has left you asking, even after two and a half hours, what makes Napoleon tick. We know he's a military genius. We're now know why he was crowned emperor.

From Lord Lucan to the New York heiress who disappeared after going shopping for a dress: As long lost video shows Michael Rockefeller living amongst the cannibal tribes.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 26, 2023
Michael Rockefeller's family used their considerable wealth to try to locate him when he went missing in Papua New Guinea in 1961. However, no trace of the 23-year-old man was ever found until 2015, when a film clip of him lying in a warehouse since 1969 mysteriously appeared. It depicted a naked and befuddled white man among the massed ranks of a group of Papuan cannibals, sparking widespread rumors that Rockefeller was alive and well. Lord Lucan vanished in 1974 after being accused of murdering his family's nanny in his London home. Arthur Kingsley Porter, an archaeologist and historian, disappeared in 1933 on a visit to a small island off the west coast of Ireland. Porter, who had migrated from the United States to Donegal with his partner, had become an overnight millionaire at the age of 18 because his father was a banking tycoon. Dorothy Arnold, an American socialite and heiress, was a contributor to her billionaire father's perfume business. In 1910, she disappeared from New York after informing her family that she was going shopping for a dress. Ambrose Small, a millionaire theatre magnate, vanished in December 1919, the day after he sold his chain of theatres in Canada and the United States for $1.75 million, or the equivalent of millions of pounds in today's money. After going sailing in heavy seas, the oil and gas tycoon Guma Aguiar, 35, died off the coast of Florida in 2012.

When Stuart Lubbock was discovered dead in his swimming pond following a late-night drug-fuelled party more than 20 years ago, he was one of the worst falls from grace in pop history. He disappeared for more than a decade after being cut off by ITV shortly after being sacked in 2003, and has attempted several comebacks. But now certain Michael Barrymore is giving showbusiness one last chance at the age of 71 by orchestrating himself another time, but this time he will be calling the shots as a director.
