Charles Marion Russell (March 19, 1864-1864), also known as C. M. Russell, Charlie Russell, and "Kid" Russell, was an American artist of the Old American West.
Russell also created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians, and landscapes in the Western United States and Canada, in addition to bronze sculptures.
Russell, also known as a "cowboy artist," was also a storyteller and author.
He became a champion for Native Americans in the West, for example, assisting the effort by landless Chippewa to have a reservation established for them in Montana.
In 1916, Congress passed legislation to establish such a reservation, now known as the Rocky Boy Reservation. The C.M. Russell Museum Complex, which is located in Great Falls, Montana, houses over 2,000 Russell artworks, personal items, and artifacts.
Other major collections are on display at the Montana Historical Society in Helena, Montana, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Sid Richardson Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The Flathead Indians' mural, designed by Russell, hangs in Helena's state capitol building.
At a 2005 auction, Russell's 1918 painting Piegans sold for $5.6 million.
He was inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum's Hall of Great Westerners in 1955.
