Charles Cotton (born 28 April 1630 – 16 February 1687) was an English poet and writer best known for translating Michel de Montaigne's French works for his contributions to The Compleat Angler and the influential The Compleat Gamester attributed to him.
Early life
He was born in Beresford, Staffordshire, near the Derbyshire Peak District. Charles Cotton the Elder, his father, was a friend of Ben Jonson, John Selden, Sir Henry Wotton, and Izaak Walton. The son was obviously not sent to university, but Ralph Rawson, one of the fellows ejected from Brasenose College, Oxford in 1648, was tutored by him. Cotton travelled in France and Italy, and at the age of twenty-eight, he succeeded in an estate that had been largely encumbered by litigation during his father's lifetime. In Cotton's case in the Peak District and North Staffordshire, the rest of his life was primarily spent in quiet country pursuits. His Voyage to Ireland in Burlesque (1670) reveals that he held a Captain's commission and served in Ireland.
