Charles Brooks Jr. Life

Charles Brooks Jr. (September 1, 1942 – December 7, 1982), also known as Shareef Ahmad Abdul-Rahim, was the first person in the United States to be executed by lethal injection.

He was the first black person to be executed in Texas since 1964 and the first Black person to be executed anywhere in the United States of America during the post-Gregg period.

Early life

Brooks was raised in a Fort Worth, Texas family. He attended I.M. Terrell High School, where he played football, is where he learned about football.

He was in jail in Leavenworth, Texas, for unlawful firearms possession.

Brooks went to a used car lot on December 14, 1976, and asked to try drive a car. David Gregory, a mechanic, accompanied him on the ride. Woody Loudres, Brooks' accomplice, was arrested in the trunk of the vehicle, and Brooks and Loudres proceeded to a motel. The mechanic was tied to a chair with coat hangers, gagged with tape, and then shot in the head.

Neither Brooks nor Loudres will tell who fired the shot, and thus the state requested the death penalty for both men. On April 25, 1978, Brooks was sentenced to death. Loudres was also guilty of the death penalty, but his conviction was reversibly dismissed on appeal, and he entered a plea bargain in exchange for a 40-year prison term. After 11 years in prison, he was paroled.

A petition seeking a stay of execution was dismissed by 6–3 by the Supreme Court of the United States. Pardons and Paroles' State Board had been recommended by 2–1 that execution take place.

At the Ellis Unit, which housed condemned men, Brooks was detained on death row.

Brooks was rolled into the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville, Texas, after a last meal consisting of a T-bone steak, french fries, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, biscuits, peach cobbler, and iced tea. He made his final address there. While in jail, Brooks converted to Islam, according to a prayer.

Brooks was executed on December 7, 1982 at the age of 40.
