Charles Freer Andrews Life

Andrews, Charles Freer Andrews (12 February 1871 – 5 April 1940) was a priest of the Church of England.

He became a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi and was credited with the origins of India's unification.

He was instrumental in persuading Gandhi to return from South Africa, where Gandhi had been a leading light in the Indian civil rights struggle. C.

By Gandhi, Andrews was affectionately referred to as Christ's Faithful Apostle, based on his initials, C.F.A. He was named Deenabandhu, or "Friend of the Poor," after Gandhi and his students at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, India.

Early life

Charles Freer Andrews was born in 1871 at 14 Brunel Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. John Edwin Andrews' father, John Edwin Andrews, was the "Angel" (bishop) of the Catholic Apostolic Church in Birmingham. Charles was one of 14 children in the United Kingdom. Because of a friend's duplicity, the family was unable to meet ends meet and was forced to work overtime. Andrews was a pupil at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and afterward read Classics at Pembroke College, Cambridge. During this time, he migrated away from his family's church and was approved for ordination in the Church of England.

Andrews, a deacon, took over Pembroke College Mission in south London in 1896. He was appointed priest a year later and became Vice-Principal of Westcott House Theological College in Cambridge.

Later life

Around this time Gandhi reasoned with Andrews that it was still in the best interests for sympathetic Britons like himself to flee the freedom battle to Indians. So Andrews began to spend more time in the United Kingdom, educating young people from around the globe about Christ's call to radical discipleship. Christ's Faithful Apostle, based on the initials of his name, "C.F.A," was Gandhi's favorite nickname for Andrews. He was widely known as Gandhi's closest friend and he was perhaps the only major figure to address Gandhi by his first name, Mohan.

Charlie Andrews died on April 5, 1940, on a visit to Calcutta, and is buried in Lower Circular Road cemetery, Calcutta, 'Christian Burial ground.'
