Chad Butler Life

Chad Matthew Butler (born 24 March 1974) is the drummer for the band Switchfoot, which he co-founded with Jon and Tim Foreman in 1996.

For a few years, Butler lived in Amsterdam, but he and his family later moved to San Diego, California, where he and his three children, Evan (born in 2001), Dylan, and Charlotte (born in 2007).

Early life

Chad Lamont Butler was born in Crowley, Louisiana, but he was raised in Port Arthur, Texas, on December 29, 1973. Butler was the only child of Charleston Butler and Weslyn "Mama Wes" Butler. Butler was born prematurely and had a multitude of health problems, including a birth defect that led his legs to point inward that required braces to fix. He also had to be propped up after sleeping due to digestive difficulties. After a severe bout of pinkeye, his eyesight was poor, and he nearly went blind. Butler had pneumonia at least nine times as an infant.

Butler, the son of a trumpet player, had an interest in music since childhood: "I come from a classical background, I went to sing Italian sonnets, Negro spirituals, and shit of that sort." He learned to play many instruments by ear, including piano, trumpet, drums, and flugelhorn before starting music lessons. His vocal style was once described as "high-voiced, unstable, and provocateur, with the ability to slap your face as well as sing you a love song." After receiving a drum machine and keyboard one Christmas, he began synthesizing beats to rap.

Butler began playing multiple instruments at school as a youth and was urged by his stepfather Bill Monroe to write and perform his own music. Butler was particularly interested in the burgeoning hip hop scene as a youth and soon became mates with Bernard "Bun B" Freeman due to their common love for music.

Personal life

While Butler was in jail in 2003, he married Chinara. Chad Lamont Butler II and Dahcory Butler, two older sons, have one child together, a daughter named Christian, and he has two older brothers, both of whom are from previous marriages.

Chad Butler Career

Music career

Butler formed Underground Kingz (often referred to as UGK) with Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in 1987 in Port Arthur, Texas. The pair first signed to independent label Big Tyme Records in 1992, a modest local success that culminated in the group's signing to Jive Records later this year. They launched Too Hard to Swallow through Jive in November, their first major label debut, securing their position at #37 on the US Top R&B/Hip Albums chart.

Super Tight, the United Kingdom's second album, was released in 1994 to critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at #95 on the Billboard 200 and #9 on the Top R&B/Hip Albums chart. Ridin' Dirty, UGK's third album, became their most popular in 1996, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Albums chart and #15 on the Billboard 200, achieving widespread critical and commercial success, having sold 850,000 copies to date.

After a brief absence from music in the late 1990s, UGK returned to form in 2000, appearing on Jay-Z's smash hit single "Big Pimpin" on the Billboard 200, as well as "Sippin' on Some Syrup," which debuted at #30 on the US Hot R&B/Hip Songs chart, a titched spot on the Top 100. Both of these partnerships have greatly enhanced the company's reputation and fuelled excitement for their next project. Jive Records struggled to cash in on this new-found passion in the UK, as their fourth album, Dirty Money, was released in 2001 with no advertisement or promotion.

Since Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in prison in August 2002, the UGK was forced to go on hiatus, which culminated in both members' going back to college. The Sweet James Jones Stories, Pimp C's debut studio album, was published in March 2005, and it was made of content obtained prior to Pimp C's detention. Pimp C's second solo studio album Pimpalation debuted in July 2006 and ranked #3 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the Top R&B/Hip Albums chart after being released from jail in December 2005.

UGK reunited on August 7, 2007, releasing their eponymous fifth studio album, debuting at number one on both the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/Hip Hop charts. The album was the last UGK album released during Pimp C's lifetime, and it inspired the hit single "I Choose You" (I Choose You) and received worldwide recognition from critics.
