Cesare Siepi Life

Cesare Siepi (born in 1923 to 2010) was an Italian opera singer, generally known as one of the top basses of the postwar period.

His voice was portrayed by a deep, warm timbre, a full, elastic, wide-ranging lower register with reduced vibrato, and a ringing, vibrant upper register.

Despite being well-known as a Verdian bass, his height, striking appearance, and his elegance in phrasing made him a natural for the role of Don Giovanni.

During an opera production at the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Wilhelm Furtwängler, he can be seen in that role.

Cesare Siepi Career

Early career

Born in Milan (his year of birth is uncertain between 1919 and 1923, though 1923 is given as official), he began singing as a member of a madrigal group. He often seemed to have been self-taught after attending the music conservatory in his hometown for a short period of time. World War II ended his operatic career. Siepi, an anti-fast movement in Schio, near Venice, disappeared to Switzerland after his debut in 1941 (as Sparafucile in Rigoletto).

After the war's end, his career took off immediately. At La Fenice, Venice, Zaccaria in Nabucco was a success, followed by the first of many engagements at La Scala, Milan. His early involvements in Verdi bass, as a leading role in Boito's Mefistofele under Arturo Toscanini, as Colline in La bohème, and La Gioconda, La favorite, and I puritani.
