Early life
Stewart was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on April 22nd, 1959, the daughter of Mary (Stewart) and John Ralph Nursall. Her parents attended the University of Alberta, her mother a physiology teaching assistant, and her father a biology professor. Stewart attended Strathcona Composite High School. She began jazz dance lessons in high school and moved to London to study dance and general performing arts, as well as where she passed the audition for her first film, The Apple.
Personal life
She is the sister of Alan Nursall, a scientist and media presenter who focuses on science coverage for the Canadian television series Daily Planet and Discovery Channel. John Nursall, my older brother, is a freelance writer, film director, and producer.
She married actor John Findlater in 1983 and divorced in 1985. Richard Allerton married her in 1992. As of 2013, she has a daughter and a son and lived in Brooklyn, New York.
Career
Stewart appeared in The Apple, a musical science fiction cult film from 1980. During the production of The Apple, director Menahem Golan became outraged with her old name Mary Nursall and demanded that she change it, but she did use her mother's maiden name.
