ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: A creepy call that brought home dread of the abused

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 21, 2024
It was about 11pm, just before I got into bed, that I heard a ping from my phone. I assumed it was a text from BA cancelling my flight the next day, but it was an answerphone message with the caller ID coming up 'Unknown'. When I listened, I heard a deep, Northern-accented voice saying slowly and deliberately: 'You haven't got back to me. It's been four weeks. I saw you in that shop that one time. Get back to me NOW!' It was extremely unpleasant. Of course I didn't want to speak with this man and, in any case, with his number withheld, it was impossible to return the call.

By the time Caryan met Dyan in 1962, he had already built up a long list of acting credits and established himself as one of Hollywood's top top performers, but he had also built a reputation as a notorious actor. With three failed marriages under his belt, as well as allegations of abuse, alcoholism, and infidelity surrounding him, it seemed that his and Dyan's relationship was doomed from the start. All of Cary's executives had a similar tale to tell: the heartthrob wooed them with his suave personality, debonair pride, and memorizing charm, but they ultimately preferred Hollywood over family life. So when he started dating Dyan, a budding young star 33 years his junior who was still trying to break into the industry, many wondered: would she be the one to finally tame the famous flirt? FEMAIL has chronicled Dyan's journey from start to finish as the world braces for the debut of a new series based on her memoir about her friendship with the legendary actress.

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 12, 2023
They were two of the world's most popular couples, with enough glamour between them to rival Hollywood stars of the day, from Cary Grant and Paul Newman to Natalie Wood and Deborah Kerr. So when Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, entertained US President John F Kennedy and his First Lady, Jackie, at Buckingham Palace in June 1961, the visit piqued unprecedented curiosity. The visit was part of a couple's trip to Europe in the aftermath of JFK's election and his inauguration as a young president in November 1960. The apprehensions were palpable. It was the start of something amazing for the Queen and Philip, as well as other aspects of royal life: its arrival on the international stage as celebrities, an aspect of royal life now so ingrained that it is impossible to remember.

Nonetheless, Grant volunteered to film student Kent Schuelke in the 1980s, who was making a film about the Hollywood icon, but only if his voice was not recorded. The interview ended up being recorded after Mr Schuelke's companion taped the video without permission.

QUENTIN LETTS: Dame Eleanor Laing, the deputy speaker, shook her head to young Alex Chalk to announce that his debate should proceed. The minister climbed and climbed as he increased. Tall chap. He was utterly extended and gazed down at the house from such height, a surprise that he did not need an oxygen mask.

GLENNYS ROBERTS: I was in charge of Tony Bennett's handwriting and performed Fly Me To The Moon on the day

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2023
I was just about as ill as anyone else when the plane landed in Los Angeles last summer. My marriage to tailor-to-the-stars Doug Hayward was going nowhere, and I'd decided to get away from it all by visiting Sandy, the wife of American singer Tony Bennett, who died last month at the age of 96. Sandy and I were pregnant together when Tony first arrived in London in 1969. Doug made Tony's suit and wanted to take him home for dinner, so the Bennetts spent a lot of time at our Mayfair apartment. Tony was a man of few words, but he kept coming back for my toad in the hole. Sandy was - and remains - one of the funniest people I've ever met. If ever we want to banish a bout of depression, my daughter and I still call her in Las Vegas, where she now lives. We were so excited to get our figures back that we spent a lot of time in London's Bond Street shopping clothes that the boys - Joanna, named after one of Tony's songs, and my lovely Polly - were born just two weeks apart.
