Lacena Rustin was born in Royal Oak Township, Michigan, on August 19, 1953. Carson's mother was raised in the Episcopal Church. She graduated from Ferndale High School. Carson met her future husband, who was also a Detroit native, in the 1970s while both were undergraduates at Yale University.
Carson earned her MBA at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School after her Yale graduation.

Personal life
Carson and her husband were married in 1975. They have three sons, Murray, Benjamin Jr., and Rhoeyce, as well as several grandchildren. The couple lived in West Friendship, Maryland, until 2013 and then moved to Florida. Both she and her husband are long-serving members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Carson is a vegetarian, according to her religious convictions.
