Buckshot Jones Career

Life and career

Since he ran into a table and showed no signs of pain or agony, Jones gained the nickname "buckshot" from his grandfather. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Georgia, where he obtained a business degree, his racing passion began as a hobby. Jones had intended to race motocross, but his dad suggested stock cars because they were safer.

Jones went out to dinner with his father, where he told him that he wanted to be a NASCAR champion. Jones and his father devised a six-year plan that would encourage Jones to climb the ladder and achieve his dream.

Jones began racing in 1995 with Buckshot Racing, his own team. Jones recruited Ricky Pearson, son of legendary David Pearson, as his crew chief after a miserable rookie campaign in which his best finish was a ninth. Jones earned the Most Popular Driver award in 1998 and won two races in the next three years. He made the jump to Winston Cup in 1999, after marrying his longtime girlfriend Jina. Larry Pearson, Ricky's brother, was responsible for the Busch ride. Crown Fiber Communications was the primary sponsor of the car. Jones failed to qualify several times in his rookie season, including the first two races of the season. A DNF was the usual result on those days when he did not make the field. He decided to put an end to his Rookie of the Year campaign and return to the Busch Series after nine starts. He had one pole, three top-tens, and finished 21st in points during his Busch campaign in 2000.

He returned to the Cup Series in 2001, leading the No. 81 in the No. 1 slot. Dodge Intrepid, 44, is owned by Petty Enterprises of Georgia. The season was a disappointment, unfortunately. He failed to qualify 5 times and had ten DNFs, placing 41st in points with a best finish of 16th at Talladega in the spring and again at Phoenix. Buckshot stopped racing full time in April of 2002 due to a growing family. He was 35th in points after Martinsville, finishing fifth in his home run at Atlanta, finishing 12th in his home run. In 2003, he returned to two series, finishing 17th for Phoenix Racing in Daytona in July and leading 19 laps for Michael Waltrip Racing in a career-best effort at Talladega before retiring with injuries due to a blown tire.

Buckshot has since sold his squad and has temporarily resigned from racing. He ran in a sanctioned race in 2004, when he ran two Busch Series events. In Gwinnett County, Georgia, he works in land acquisition and real estate. In December 2006, he returned to auto racing in the Snowball Derby, but he came last after being trapped in a late crash. He returned to racing in 2007 to drive the No. 108. In the Southern Division of the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, 00 Chevrolet for DMT Motorsports, but the season's end, but he was re-retired at the end. Jones competed in the third division of the Whelen Modified Tour in 2015.
