George Runie "Buck" Farmer (born February 20, 1991) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Early life

Farmer attended Rockdale County High School where he was a four-year letter winner and three-year captain. During his junior year, he posted a 1.50 earned run average (ERA), with a .443 batting average, while he posted a 2.02 ERA, with a .468 batting average during his senior year. Farmer holds the Rockdale single-game strikeout record with 22 against Dacula High School in 2008. He was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the 2008 Connie Mack World Series, and MVP of the 2008 World Wood Bat Championships. Farmer was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 46th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign and elected to play college baseball at the Georgia Institute of Technology for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

College career

In 2010, the farmer began his collegiate career at Georgia Tech. He set a 5-1 record and a 3.63 ERA in 19 appearances during his freshman season. In four innings of relief against Wake Forest on March 14, he won for the first time in his career, restricting the Deacons to only two hits. Farmer made an 11–3 record and a 2.82 ERA in 16 starts during his sophomore season. In conference play, he went 8-1. In 2011, the eight conference victories were the most by any pitcher in the league in 2011. He played collegiate summer baseball with the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League beginning in 2011.

Farmer pitched a team-high 10623 innings, third in the Atlantic Coast Conference, during his junior season (ACC). He had a 3.54 ERA and only allowed 100 hits with 37 walks and 115 strikeouts, his third-most in the ACC. With his 1–0 victory over Duke, he became the ACC Pitcher of the Week and College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft, but he moved to Georgia Tech for his senior season. Farmer had a 9–5 record in 17 starts, as well as a 2.78 ERA in 11313 innings with 122 strikeouts during his senior season. He came in second place in strikeouts and finished second in the ACC in strikeouts, innings pitched, and strikeouts. He was a semifinalist for the ACC Pitcher of the Year.

Professional career

In the fifth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft, the Detroit Tigers selected a farmer and agreed to a minor league contract.

Farmer began his 2014 season with the West Michigan Whitecaps, where he made 18 appearances before being promoted to the Double-A Erie SeaWolves, where he appeared in two games. Farmer was 11-05, with a 2.65 ERA, allowing 101 runs over 1152–3 innings with 127 strikeouts and 28 walks. Farmer was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Year after the year.

In a match against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 13, 2014, the farmer made his major league debut. He pitched five innings on his debut, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four runs and ending with a no-decision. Following his debut, he was recruited to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. On August 23, 2014, the Tigers called Farmer out once more to open the first game of a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Farmer pitched 113 runs on five hits in his second major league appearance, while walking two runs and striking out three in a 12–4 loss.

On May 28, Farmer got his first run against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, when he allowed seven runs on nine hits in five innings. On June 24, 2015, the Tigers recalled him. Farmer, who had 12 starts in 12 innings, had a 3.8 percent strikeouts and 22 walks in 6813 innings.

Farmer was one of the Tigers' first day roster in 2016. Farmer was sent to the Toledo Mud Hens on April 16, 2016. After Drew VerHagen was released to Toledo the same day, the farmer was recalled to the Tigers on May 22. Farmer's first major league game of the year against the Minnesota Twins was held on September 21, 2016. Farmer made 13 relief appearances for the Tigers in 2016, a 4.60 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 29+1,3 innings pitched, in addition to the one.

In 2017, the Toledo Mud Hens began the season. Farmer's second call-up of the year to Detroit came on May 26. Farmer started against the Chicago White Sox on May 27 with 11 strikeouts and zero earned runs, his first major league win for him. Farmer made 11 starts for the 2017 Tigers, going 5-5 with a 6.75 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 48 innings.

Farmer's entire 2018 season was left out of the Tigers bullpen, with the exception of one spot starting at one spot. He made 66 appearances, including a 3.15 ERA, while batting out 57 batters in 69+1 13 innings.

In 2019, the farmer again filled a bullpen role, with the exception of one spot starting. He went 6–6 on the season with 73 strikeouts in 67+239 innings, while still averaging career highs in ERA (37.22) and WHIP (1.271).

The Tigers settled on a one-year, $1.15 million contract on January 10, 2020. Farmer had a dispute with arbitration. Farmer had a 3.80 ERA in the 2020 season (23 games) with 14 strikeouts in 21+1,3 innings.

The Tigers and Farmer decided to a one-year, $1.85 million contract, avoiding arbitration. Farmer was selected for assignment by the Tigers on May 7, 2021, after pitching to a 12.66 ERA in 12 games to start the season. On May 11, he was refused to Triple-A Toledo, where he was born outright. As his deal was drafted by the Tigers from Toledo, the farmer will return to the big leagues on June 13. Farmer made nine appearances out of the bullpen in Toledo, pitching 11.1 innings and ending with a 3.97 ERA, which culminated in a streak of four straight outings right before his call-up. For the 2021 Tigers, the farmer struggled to a 6.37 ERA in 35+13 innings. The Tigers had approved Farmer for assignment on August 14, 2021. The Tigers released him on August 17 after he was released by the Tigers on August 17.

Farmer's minor league deal with the Texas Rangers organization was signed to the Round Rock Express of the Triple-A West on August 21, 2021.

Farmer signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds on March 16, 2022. Farmer had made the 2022 opening day roster on April 4, 2022. On May 6, he had been selected for service. The Cincinnati Reds acquired him from Louisville on July 9, 2022.
