Bryan Herta Career

Racing career

Herta was a success in lower formulae, winning the Barber Formula Ford and Barber Saab Pro Series and dominating the 1993 Indy Lights championship with Tasman Motorsports.

He joined IndyCar racing in 1994 with team owner A. J. Foyt, where he had several promising races before suffering a season-ending injury in Toronto.

Herta was hired in 1995 to work for Chip Ganassi Racing. Despite a pole at Phoenix, the pair was unsuccessful, with Herta only winning 20th place in the series standings, while his colleague Jimmy Vasser finished eighth, despite a pole. Despite this, Herta landed a top ride with Team Rahal for the 1996 season.

Herta made a name for himself on road courses during the next two years, particularly at Laguna Seca Raceway. He was the leader in 1996 until he met Alex Zanardi during the exciting ride through the "Corkscrew" chicane and took the win. Herta, who rarely qualified in the first row at Laguna Seca, has now won two events on the twisty road course in 1998 and 1999. Fan interest in the Shell-sponsored driver was dubbed by team owner David Letterman as "Hertamania" during Herta's career.

Herta was involved in one of the first incidents of North American motor racing in the opening laps of the 1998 race at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin's Road America circuit. Herta spun out into a paved runoff area facing incoming traffic in her fifth turn on the 4-mile (6.4 km) road course. An ESPN camera that had zoomed in on Herta's head snapped back when Herta clenched his fists and pushed them against the sides of his head a few seconds later. Alex Barron slid into the front of Herta's vehicle and rode up on top of it, as course workers dispersed. Both drivers were fine. Barron's vehicle had actually struck his hands, only inches from his face, according to Herta.

Herta rode for a number of Champ Car clubs from 2000 to 2003, including Forsythe Championship Racing, Mo Nunn Racing, and PK Racing, but he never quite recovered his form from the late 1990s. Herta drove an F1 car for the first time in 2002, piloting a Minardi at the "Thunder in the Park" festival held at Donington Park. This led to rumors that he would test and even race for Minardi in F1, but this never happened.

He revived his open-wheel racing career by swapping for an injured Dario Franchitti midway through the 2003 IRL season.

Herta won the IndyCar Series at Kansas Speedway for Andretti Green Racing, his third appearance in the IRL. He was recalled in a four-car crew in 2004, mainly running development engines. Herta claimed his second IndyCar Series victory on July 31, 2005, defeating AGR coworker Dan Wheldon in a close finish in the Firestone Indy 400 at the Michigan International Speedway.

He worked for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and Fundidora Park in the A1 Grand Prix series from 1996 to Andretti Green for the IRL season in early 2006.

Herta has participated in the Indianapolis 500 five times since 1994-1995-1995-1995, 2004-2006), with three top ten finishes, including a best of 3rd in 2005. AliveDesignCo.com has Bryan's helmets painted.

Herta was confirmed as a pilot for Andretti Green Racing's latest Acura Le Mans prototype program for the 2007 American Le Mans Series season on October 31, 2006. He shared the car with Marino Franchitti, brother of his former teammate Dario Franchitti. Dario will also be able to drive a limited ALMS program with both Marino and Herta on January 3, 2007. Herta triumphed in 1 class victory, placing her 7th in driver points on the season. He also worked with A1 Team USA. Herta finished in 10th place at the international championships in Melbourne.
