Bryan Edwards Career

Career

Edwards became a leader of Jamaica's colonial assembly but he returned to England in a few years.

Edwards attempted and failed to gain a seat in Parliament as a representative for Chichester in 1782. He went back to Jamaica from 1787 to 1792. He then settled in England as a West India merchant, making another failed attempt to enter Parliament in 1795, this time in Southampton.

He became Member of Parliament for Grampound, a notoriously corrupt Cornish borough, on May 28th, alongside Robert Sewell, another pro-slavery politician with ambitions in Jamaica. Edwards ruled this seat until his death.

Edwards wrote in 1784 about the late Proceedings of the Government respecting the Trade of the West Indian Islands with the United States of America, in which he criticized the government's limitations on trade with the United States. In 1793, he published The History, Civil and Commercial of the British Colonies in the West Indies, and in 1797 he published his Historical Survey of the French Colonies in St Domingo, which was published in two volumes. The latter two titles were republished in three volumes later, with some additional information. The History of the British Colonies in the West Indies was also published in three volumes. This has been translated into German and, in part, French and Spanish. In 1819, a fifth edition was published.

Edwards drew an account of his travels when Mungo Park returned to Africa in 1796 from Park's epic journey. Edwards, the secretary of the Association for Promoting the Discovering of the Interior Parts of Africa, was the author of this paper in their Proceedings. When Park wrote his own account of his travels, he borrowed Edwards' help.

Edwards also wrote poems and other works relating to the West Indies' past.
