The true characters behind Trent Dalton's Netflix hit Boy Swallows Universe: Meet the violent crooks and junkie mum who inspired the book

The real life criminals behind the autobiographical novel Boy Swallows Universe, which has since been turned into a worldwide Netflix hit series, were a murderer and repeat armed robber. In the screen version of Trent Dalton's bestselling book, Arthur 'Slim' Halliday and Gary John Lawrence were long term prisoners of Brisbane's notorious Boggo Road jail, played by actor Bryan Brown and Travis Fimmel. Halliday was involved in Trent Dalton's childhood as a parent and babysitter, while Lawrence was the author's stepfather. Squalid Boggo Road, which was known in the 1980s as a protester, prisoners' rooftop demonstrations, as well as inmates' rats and bird lice, is almost as much a protagonist in the story as Dalton's mother, who goes to prison for heroin trafficking. In the first week of its debut, Boy Swallows Universe, which has sold more than a million copies and gained nine awards, has ranked at number five globally on Netflix.
