Bruce Andrews Life

Bruce Andrews (April 1, 1948) is an American poet who is one of the key figures associated with the Language poets (or L=A=N=G=U=G=G=E poets, since the journal bears the word).

Life and work

Andrews was born in Chicago and studied international relations at Johns Hopkins University and political science at Harvard. Edge, his first book, was published in 1973.

He edited L=A=G=U=G=G=E Magazine, which appeared in 13 issues from 1978 to 1981 (along with other publications including This, A Hundred Posters, Big Deal, Dog City, Hills, Oculist Witnesses, and Roof) was one of the most popular sites for Language poetry, together with Charles Bernstein. He and Bernstein first published the majority of the 13 issues in The L=A=N=G=E Book in 1984.

Andrews dismisses the classical idea of poetry as the 'direct treatment' of words in jargon, arguing that the only thing that can be treated is language itself.

Andrews served as a professor of political science at Fordham University from 1975 to 2013. He sluggishly condemned the US government's policies of imperialism and subversion.

Andrews appeared on the O'Reilly Factor in November 2006 after a Fordham undergraduate who worked on the program protested Andrews' leftist views.

Andrews has published forty books of poetry, some on his own or in collaboration with other writers, as well as a number of books of essays. His books include I Don't Have Any Paper So Shut Up (1992), Ex Why Zee, Performance Texts, Word Maps, Bricolage & Improvisation (1995). Heartbeat, 2006 (Salt Publishing, ISBN 1-84471-068-8) and Swoon Noir (Chax Press, 2007; ISBN 978-0-925-949-48-5) bring Andrews well into the 21st century.
