After graduating from high school, Moynahan pursued a modeling career, despite admitting she never read fashion magazines more. She began her career in Springfield, Massachusetts, where she attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
At the age of 18, Moynahan began publishing in magazines like Vogue and Elle, as well as other well-known magazines. Vogue Paris (May 1993), Elle (October 1993), and Glamour (six times). In an interview given in July 2004, Moynahan recounted her early career "It was a wild world that cost a lot." I liked being a model but I knew it wouldn't last so I tried acting."
She began selling soap and shampoo shampoo during this time, rather than attending acting and art lessons. She studied acting at the Caymichael Patten Studio in New York, and in 1999, she made her television debut as Natasha in HBO's romantic comedy Sex and the City. She continued to appear on the program until she was fired from Mr. Big (Chris Noth). She appeared in smaller film roles in In the Weeds and Whipped over the course of a year.
Rachel, a bartender and dancer in a wild New York bar in 2000, was Moynahan's debut in Coyote Ugly, a role she felt in Moynahan's breakthrough. The film received mostly critical feedback, but it was still a box-office hit, grossing $133 million worldwide. Hally, John Cusack's fiancée, was her next film appearance in 2001 film Serendipity.
In the action film The Sum of All Fears, based on Tom Clancy's book of the same name, Moynahan appeared alongside Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman. The Sum of All Fears received ambivalent feedback, but it was a commercial success, with $193 million at the box office. In The Recruit (2003), she served as a CIA trainee. The film was poorly received, with Mike Clark of USA Today commenting on it. The recruit is a "less-than-middling melodrama whose subject matter and talent never clicked as much as its credits do.'
Moynahan appeared in Alex Proyas' science-fiction film I, Robot, loosely based on Isaac Asimov's short-story collection of the same name. Dr. Susan Calvin, a robot psychology specialist, is portrayed by Moynahan. I, Robot received mixed reviews upon its launch, but critics adored Moynahan's appearance. The film's director, Daniel Neman of Richmond, disliked it, despite the fact that she "turns in a good performance as Dr. Calvin, the convenient character." The film, which has a worldwide audience, remains Moynahan's most commercially successful film to date. As Ava Fontaine Orlov, the wife of Nicolas Cage's character, she was the heroine of her next film, 2005's Lord of War, a political crime drama. It debuted on September 20, 2006, and nearly 13.3 million viewers watched it. Six Degrees premiered to a brisk reception, with David Hinckley of the New York Daily News writing, "In theory, it's an intriguing idea for a series." Six Degrees doesn't work in practice at all, in terms of magnetizing you in right away.' In May 2007, the series was cancelled after one season.
Moynahan's next film role was in Unknown, a thriller about a group of people kidnapped and trying to escape their captors together in November 2006.
