Brian Viglione Career

Career

When Brian Viglione was first introduced to the drums by his father on Christmas Day at the age of five, his interest in the music began to grow at age nine. In 1990, his father brought him to The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine for the first time, and he became his first up-close-and-coming inspiration on the instrument. He began playing in clubs with bands around New England before moving from New Hampshire to Boston in 1999. He appeared in several Boston punk bands on both drums and bass guitar.

Viglione first met Amanda Palmer at a Halloween party in October 2000, and the Dresden Dolls formed together for their first time playing together. They are a Boston-based keyboard/drum duo.

Viglione does more than play drums, includes the first single "Sing" from their 2006 release "Yes, Virginia," as well as vocals on their own version of "Pierre" from The Dresden Dolls: Live in Paradise.

The pair re-released their self-titled debut The Dresden Dolls, which came to worldwide fame, in early 2004 after signing with Roadrunner Records in early 2004. The pair followed Yes, Virginia, the same applauded sequel. In addition, the Dresden Dolls' live audiences continued to grow around the world as The Dresden Dolls completed sold-out tours on four continents, backed Nine Inch Nails, and appeared at world festivals such as Reading, Bonnaroo, Leeds, Fuji Rock, Roskilde, Glastonbury, and Download.

They have received numerous accolades locally, from multiple Boston Music Awards to the Boston Phoenix/FNX Best Music Poll. The band released their second live DVD chronicling their two sold-out shows at The Roundhouse in London in 2006. The concert DVD captures the band's passionate fan base, many of whom travelled from all around the United States, Australia, and Europe to attend in concert at the peak of the band's most active period.

They toured with the True Colors Tour in June 2007, including his debut at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan and first review in The New York Times.

In 2010, the Dresden Dolls returned to the United States for a tour, beginning in New York City on Halloween and ending in San Francisco on New Year's Eve. In 2011, they held two shows in Australia and Mexico, as well as seven shows in Australia and New Zealand. In August 2016, they appeared in Kingston, New York, Boston, and Brooklyn. They held a Halloween show in Washington, D.C., and three shows at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston in November. Two reunion shows for Halloween 2018 in the United Kingdom have been announced (May 2018).

Viglione appeared in The Onion Cellar, an American Repertory Theater performance in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in January 2007. The show was co-written by The Dresden Dolls, cast, and producer Marcus Stern, loosely based on a chapter from Günter Grass' book The Tin Drum. Following one actor's touching scene recalling childhood violence, the band's music was often used in unconventional ways to convey drama and comedic grace in a call and response with the actors on stage, and Viglione was given a featured drum solo. The entire 40-show run sold out, and rave reviews followed the performance.

Viglione was the drummer for Brooklyn's punk orchestra World/Inferno Friendship Society, performing 16 countries and releasing a new studio album with The Dresden Dolls' production team, Paul Q. Kolderie, Adam Taylor, and Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studios in Allston, Massachusetts, from May 2008 to October 2009. Addicted To Bad Ideas: Peter Lorre's twentieth century in the United States, Canada, Netherlands, and Finland. During the encore, Viglione's last appearance with the group was a sell-out success at The Grand Ball Room, NYC, where hundreds of fans rushed the stage amid a sea of balloons and video projections.

Viglione was also heavily involved in various side projects and albums, including Black Tape for a Blue Girl's album 10 Neurotics.

Viglione performed his parts on 12 of the 14 tracks (drums, bass & guitar), both in December 2008 and January 2009 in B.C. The first Dresden Dolls album was recorded in a studio owned by Martin Bisi. He also co-produced the album. Viglione played numerous instruments and helped shape the album's layout and sonic direction.

Brian was announced as the Violent Femmes' new drummer on July 15, 2013.

On April 18, 2015, they announced the EP Happy New Year for Record Store Day. It was the first time the band had recorded original songs in 15 years. The EP was released on 12-inch, 180-gram, champagne-colored vinyl and later became available for digital download on June 2, 2015.

Viglione went on to record The album We Can Do Anything With Violent Femmes before leaving the band in December 2015.

In addition to his various recording and touring performances, he has led drumming workshops to help participants develop personal creativity on the instrument. He has lectured at Harvard University, RISD, The Boston Day and Evening Academy, and other colleges throughout the northeastern United States.

Viglione performed drums on Battle Naked, the debut album from Holly Brewer's band, HUMANWINE, which was released on Warner Music Group's Cordless Recordings. He went on a national tour in the United States to promote this film between March and April 2007.

He played drums for the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts I-IV on a drum kit he built on site from scrap metal and found objects shortly thereafter. "Working with Trent on 'Ghosts' was a blast, and he really made it a very creative environment by requiring me to build a drum kit and allowing me to improvise my drum parts." He also wrote, toured, and recorded with several artists, including Jules Shear, Jesse Malin, Martin Bisi, and Franz Nicolay/Major General.

Viglione has appeared at Dances Of Vice, a monthly Victorian and Jazz Age-themed cabaret in New York City, since 2009, when not on the road. Nicki Jaine, Fern Knight, and The Ragwater Review were among the past collaborators at Dances of Vice.

Viglione will join The Cliks, a Toronto-based rock band, for a handful of shows around New England in the fall and winter of 2009. Viglione on drums, founder Lucas Silveira on guitar and vocals, and bassist Tobi Parks were among the performers on this tour.

In 2010, he recorded with Franz Nicolay and NYC folk singer Anthony da Costa.

He joined pianist Viktoriya Yermolyeva on a live concert in Iceland on January 29, 2011, where they performed heavy metal covers.

He appeared in Europe from 2011 to 2013, with NYC-based punk-cabaret band Botanica. He appeared on stage with Martin Bisi, The Land of Dreams, and a Blue Girl, Black Tape.

Viglione performed on three albums, LIES, TRUTHS, and OUT, from 2014 to 2016.

Brian formed Scarlet Sails with Olya Fomina in March 2015. Future From The Past, Scarlet Sails' debut album, was released on April 10, 2017 after a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Brian appeared on Radiator King's album A Hollow Triumph After All in 2017. He appeared on Radiator King's forthcoming album, Unborn Ghosts, in 2019. He has appeared on several tours as the Radiator King's drummer.
