British Gymnastics accused of a 'serious institutional betrayal' for naming just 62 people - including two former British Olympians - on list of banned coaches and members

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 20, 2023
After publishing a list of only 62 coaches and members who have been barred from returning to school in the last 29 years, campaigners have accused British Gymnastics of a "serious institutional betrayal." In the aftermath of last year's scathing Whyte Report, which addresses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in the sport, British Gymnastics has promised to identify and shame abusive coaches. On Wednesday, a list of names of former British Olympians, Brian Phelps and Stan Wild, among the individuals barred from a criminal conviction or safeguarding matter dating back to 1994, was finally published - 11 months after it was announced.

IAN HERBERT: Brian Phelps' crimes were dismissed because it is not football

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 21, 2023
IAN HERBERT - DEPUTY SPORTS WRITER: It's the swagger of Brian Phelps that takes your breath away and reveals how the perpetrators of sport's most violent crimes have a lot in common. In the 1980s, the charismatic former Olympic diver was participating in the regular sexual harassment of teenage girls at the gym he had established when he gave several interviews to advertise the location. Phelps was charged with multiple rape and indecent assault of children aged between six and fifteen at the gymnasium, where he taught trampolining after retiring from diving when some of the girls he assaulted became teenagers and testified to his offences. He was in his sixties. John, a former Olympic squad canoeist turned predatory gym operator, received 12 for similar offences. They were both sent together.
