Brent Kite Life

Brent Kite (born 7 March 1982) is a retired professional rugby league footballer.

He played for the St. George Illawarra Dragons, Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, and Penrith Panthers, as a Tonga and Australia international and New South Wales State of Origin representative front-row forward.

Kite was voted Clive Churchill Medalist for his efforts in the 2008 NRL Grand Final, in which he aided Manly-Warringah to a 40-0 victory.

Early career

And played junior football for the Queanbeyan Blues. In 1998, he was on tour of New Zealand with the Australian Schoolboys. Following his graduation from Erindale College, he spent three years with the Canberra Raiders' lower grades department.

Professional playing career

He travelled to Europe in late 2000 to compete for Tonga's national rugby league team alongside Willie Mason in the 2000 World Cup tournament.

Kite made his NRL debut against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Aussie Stadium on March 17, 2002. Kite went from the second row to the front row after suffering injuries at St George in early 2004. Kite was chosen for the Country Origins side after being on good form in early 2004. Kite was also selected to represent New South Wales in the 2004 State of Origin series, and he appeared in all three games. Kite left the Dragons at the end of the 2004 NRL season, with both sides blaming salary cap space constraints as the reason for his move to the Manly Sea Eagles.

Kite returned to Brookvale Oval for the 2005 NRL season, with Manly defeating Canberra's likes for his signature. Kite was recalled to the Blues for the 2006 State of Origin series, where he appeared in the first two games. Kite was also selected to compete in the 2006 Tri-Nations series off the bench, where he also excelled in the international level for Australia.

In the 2007 ANZAC Test triumph over New Zealand, Kite was selected to play for the Australian national team at prop forward. Kite appeared in all three games of the 2007 State of Origins collection. Kite was defeated by the Melbourne Storm in the 2007 NRL Grand Finals.

Kite was selected for the Centenary Test against New Zealand at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Kite was surprisingly not chosen for any game of the 2008 State of Origins collection.

In the 2008 NRL Grand Final, he competed for Manly against Melbourne again. Manly defeated the defending premiers 40–0 thanks to his powerhouse display, which included a try in the 59th minute. Kite was given the Clive Churchill Medal for his efforts, as the man-of-the-match.

Kite was selected in the Tonga training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. Kite was drafted in the Australia train-on squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in August 2008, and in October 2008, he was selected in the final 24-man Australia squad.

Kite was selected in the 17-man squad to represent New South Wales in the first State of Origins match in Melbourne on June 3rd, 2009. On the 8th of May 2009, he was selected for Australia in a one-off test match against New Zealand. Kite defeated the New Zealand Warriors in the 2011 NRL Grand Final, defeating them in his second premiership with Manly.

Kite captained Tonga in a Pacific Rugby League International match against fierce Pacific rivals Samoa in April 2013. He led his team to a humiliating loss of Samoa by 36–4.

Kite captained Tonga once more in October 2013, this time in their 2013 Rugby League World Cup campaign. However, despite the fact that he was a great king, Tonga was unable to advance past the group stage. He was involved in all three Tonga's matches.

In the 2014 season, Kite was a member of the Panthers. Kite was part of the Penrith team that reached the semifinals last week after defeating Eastern Suburbs 19–18 in week one of the finals before being disqualified by Canterbury the following week and missing out on his first grand final appearance since 2003. Kite declared in 2015 that it would be his last year as a professional rugby league footballer, and that he would retire at the end of the season.

Coaching career

Kite coached the Tweed Coast Raiders to win a Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League premiership and the NSW Country Rugby League's Clayton Cup in 2018.
