Officials expect the removal of the Confederate memorial by December 22, according to a bulletin from Arlington National Cemetery. During the demolition, the immediate landscape, graves, and headstones will be shielded. Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia does not agree with the decision and plans to relocate the monument to the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park in the Shenandoah Valley, according to Youngkin spokeswoman Macaulay Porter. Youngkin also opposes the Biden administration's decision to erase the statue and grave of the monument's sculptor, Moses Ezekiel, from the cemetery.

As part of a larger push to ban Confederate names from military monuments, the United States Army changed the name of Fort Bragg, one of the country's largest military installations, to Fort Liberty. A naming commission established by Congress visited the bases and interviewed residents of the immediate regions for feedback.
