Branden John Grace (born 20 May 1988) is a professional golfer from South Africa who currently plays on the European Tour, the PGA Tour, and the Sunshine Tour.
In 2012, he became the first player in the history of the European Tour to win his first four European Tour titles in the same year.On 22 July 2017, he became the first man to record a sub-63 score in a major when he shot a 62 (8-under-par) in the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.
Amateur career
Grace was born in Pretoria. He was an amateur member of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation. In 2006, he was champion of the South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship. In 2007, he became a career consultant.
Professional career
Grace appeared on the Challenge Tour in 2007, Europe's second-tier tour. He only competed in eight tournaments, but he had two top-ten finishes. He appeared on the Challenge Tour and the Sunshine Tour in 2008. He finished 35th on the Challenge Tour's Order of Merit while still placing in third place at the Ypsilon Golf Challenge, earning three top-ten finishes, including a tie for second. He then earned his European Tour card for 2009 after qualifying school.
Grace had a rough ride on the European Tour in 2009, but on the Sunshine Tour, she came in second, behind runner Retief Goosen. In seven of the nine Sunshine Tour events he participated in, he finished in the top ten in the Order of Merit's ninth place. On the Sunshine Tour, he won his first professional victory in 2010. He finished 24th on the Challenge Tour's Order of Merit in 2011, while still placing five top-ten finishes. On the Sunshine Tour, he also placed 7th in the Order of Merit. He went back to qualifying school to earn his European Tour card for 2012.
He won the Joburg Open in January, which was co-sanctioned by the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour. He took the title by a single stroke over Jamie Elson. He then won the Volvo Golf Champions for the second week in a playoff with a birdie on the first hole, beating his veteran rivals Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. He was in the penultimate team with eventual champion Jordan Spieth, and he was still tied for the lead heading to the 16th hole until he blocked his drive to the right and out of bounds, causing him to re-tee and ultimately forcing him to forfeit, resulting in a double bogey, causing him to crash him out of contention to win. Grace will have a great week at the 2015 Presidents Cup. Grace joined fellow South African Louis Oosthuizen to defeat Matt Kuchar and Patrick Reed in comfortable fashion 3 and 2. Grace will again represent Oosthuizen in a strong show against world number one Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson, who both won 4 and 3. Grace beat Oosthuizen for a third time on Day 3 and 2, defeating Reed and Rickie Fowler's team. The team won their fourth match against Bubba Watson and J. later in the day (Saturday afternoon fourball), teaming with Oosthuizen for the fourth and final time. B. Holmes. Grace will be the only time the 18th hole will be played all week, with his team winning 1st at the last round. Grace competed against Kuchar on the final day of the tournament (Sunday singles) and started out red hot, dominating Kuchar on the front nine. Kuchar recovered from several holes down before losing 2 and 1. Grace's undefeated run of 5–0–0 was her fifth appearance in Presidents Cup history, and it was only the second time for the International side.
Grace defended his Commercial Bank Qatar Masters title for his seventh victory on the European Tour on January 30th. On a day when he started two strokes behind leader Paul Lawrie, he finished two strokes ahead of Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Thorbjrn Olesen. Grace was the first person to win the tournament.
