Early life and education
Horowitz was born in Dearborn, Michigan.
Horowitz earned a bachelor of science degree in computer science from the University of Michigan in 1989.
He continued his graduate studies at MIT Media Lab, as part of the Vision and Modeling Group, under Professor Sandy Pentland. In 1991, he obtained a master of science in Media Arts and Sciences and then enrolled in the PhD program. In 1993, he dropped out of the PhD program to co-found Virage. Horowitz's academic research concentrated on the intersection of computer vision, image processing, and computer graphics. He has published many refereed papers in academic journals, including studies on the recovery of non-rigid structures from motion and fractal image compression, and more than a dozen patents have been granted.

Horowitz is married to designer Irene Au, who has worked with Netscape, Yahoo, Google, and Udacity.
Career
Horowitz became Yahoo's Senior Director of Media Search in 2004. He later began an internal Hack Yahoo group, most well-known for "Hack Days." Hack Days eventually evolved into a public event hosted by Open Hack Days, including Beck's appearance on Yahoo's Sunnyvale campus in 2006. He was eventually promoted to Vice President of Advanced Development, and his staff developed Yahoo Research Berkeley and the Brickhouse incubator. Horowitz is also known for sponsoring numerous "Web 2.0" deals into Yahoo, such as Flickr, MyBlogLog, and Jumpcut.
Horowitz joined Yahoo as vice president of product for consumer applications in 2008, then heading product management teams for Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, Google Talk, Yahoo Talk, Google Talk, Picasa, Orkut, and Blogger. Horowitz and Vic Gundotra designed and led the Google+ Project in 2011. He took over Google Photos and Streams' lead in March 2015.
Horowitz is a member of the MIT Media Lab's Visiting Committee.
