Bob Smith Life

Robert Holbrook Smith (August 8, 1879 – November 16, 1950), also known as Dr. smith.

Bob, an American physician and surgeon who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous with Bill Wilson, also known as Bill Wilson.

Family and early life

Smith was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, where he was raised, to Susan A. (Holbrook) and Walter Perrin Smith (Holbrook) His parents took him to religious services four times a week, but he decided he would not attend religious services as a child. He graduated from St Johnsbury Academy in 1898 after meeting his future wife Anne Robinson Ripley at a dance there.

Education, marriage, school, and alcoholism are all common topics.

Smith began to drink alcohol at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he was first introduced to the sport. He noticed early on that he could recover from drinking bouts more quickly and painless than his peers, and that he never had headaches, which led him to believe he was an alcoholic from the time he started drinking. Smith was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Kappa Dartmouth He worked in Boston, Chicago, and Montreal for three years before retiring in 1902. He continued to drink heavily after graduating in 1902. He then returned to college to study medicine at the University of Michigan. Alcohol use had impacted him to the point where he started missing classes by this time. His drinking led him to his suspension from school, but he returned and passed his exams for his sophomore year. He went to Rush Medical College, but his alcoholism grew to the point that his father was summoned to try to halt his decline. However, his drinking increased after a poor showing in final examinations, and the university requested that he stay for two additional quarters and remain sober during that period as a condition of graduation.

Smith became a hospital intern after college, and after that two years he was able to avoid heavy drinking for two years. He married Anne Robinson Ripley on January 25, 1915, and established his own practice in Akron, Ohio, specializing in colorectal surgery and heavy drinking. Recognizing his disorder, he checked himself into more than a dozen hospitals and sanitariums in an attempt to reduce his drinking. He was encouraged by Prohibition's passage in 1919, but soon discovered that medicinal alcohol, bootleggers, and a bootlegger could not be enough to support his heavy drinking. His life revolved around how to subpoena his wife's attempts to quit drinking and obtain the alcohol he craved while trying to maintain a medical facility in order to help his family and his drinking.

The once-flowing Kern River in Bakersfield - located 100 miles northeast of Santa Barbara - has run dry after the city's water allotment was used up in August. 'This place had actually started to become beautiful again, and now it's turning into the desert. It's horrible,' one resident said.

Democrat town council refuses to fly 'racist' Thin Blue Line flag for slain cop and instead flies LGBT rainbow banner

Aaron Pelletier, Trooper First Class, was killed last week while conducting a traffic stop on a state highway. A car hit Pelletier, his squad car, and the car he'd pulled over. The officer died from his injuries at the scene. Thousands of people have subsequently paid tribute to the 34-year-old father of two young boys, but Democrats on the Wethersfield town council voted on Monday not to fly the Thin Blue Line flag in his honor, which had been suggested by councilmember Rich Bailey.
