Robert "Bob" Herbert (born March 7, 1945) is an American journalist and an op-ed columnist who wrote for The New York Times.

Early life and education
Herbert was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised mainly in Montclair, New Jersey, where his parents owned a number of upholstery stores. He was recruited during the Vietnam War but was eventually sent to Korea. Herbert decided to go into journalism right after the war, having always been interested in politics and writing. Herbert earned a Bachelor of Science, Journalism from the State University of New York (Empire State College) in 1988.
Career
Herbert's journalistic career began with The Star-Ledger in New Jersey in 1970. Herbert continued to work as a reporter and editor at the New York Daily News from 1976 to 1985, when he became a political columnist and editor and gained notice for his editorial work. This culminated in a broadcasting spot on WCBS-TV in New York as a founding panelist of Sunday Edition in 1990, as well as the host of Hotline, a weekly news show on New York public television. He appeared on NBC from 1991 to 1993, as a national correspondent on NBC, as well as on NBC Nightly News.
The Meyer Berger Award for outstanding newspaper reporting in New York City is among Herbert's journalists' honors. In 1993, he chaired the Pulitzer Prize jury for spot news reporting. Herbert is the author of Promises Betrayed: Waking Up From The American Dream, which was published by Henry Holt & Company in 2005.
Herbert left The New York Times on March 25, 2011 with his column titled, "This Is Usual." Herbert became a Distinguished Senior Fellow in June 2011 and joined the national think-tank Demos. It was also confirmed that he would write for the Demos blog PolicyShop and The American Prospect magazine, both of which debuted with Demos in 2010.
