Early life
Prince Bhanurangse Savangwongse and his second wife were the children of Prince Birabongse's parents. King Mongkut was birabongse's paternal grandfather, who was vaguely depicted in the Hollywood films The King and I and Anna and the King. Prince Birabongse died when his mother was just four years old. Birabongse was sent to Europe in 1927 to finish his education at Eton College, where he met one of his nephews, a grandchild of his father's grandchild through his first marriage. Although he was at Eton Bira's father's death, he was left an orphanage. Prince Chula Chakrabongse, who later became Prince Bira's legal guardian, was put in his custody. Prince Bira stayed in London with Prince Chula after leaving Eton at the age of 18, while deciding on his future.
Prince Birabongse had been accepted to attend Trinity College in Cambridge, but he had not passed the Cambridge University entrance examination. Prince Chula hired a tutor for Prince Bira to help him with the exam, but Prince Bira's mind changed and said he preferred sculpture rather than studying university. Prince Chula met with leading sculptor Charles Wheeler, and Wheeler accepted Prince Bira as a pupil in his studio. Though Prince Bira displayed some promise as a sculptor, Wheeler's view taught him to draw, and so in the fall of 1934 Prince Bira enrolls at the Byam Shaw School of Art. Prince Birabongse did not attend Byam Shaw School for very long, but when he did, he became friends with Ceril Heycock and began suing her in earnest just a few weeks later. However, Prince Chula and her parents had put severe limitations on their relationship, and it wasn't until 1938 that they were able to marry.
