Bertha Bohny (born Bertha Bohny, 1903–1997), better known as Billie Dove, was an American actress.

Early retirement

Dove moved from television to be with her family after her last film Blondie of the Follies (1932). In 1935, she married wealthy oil executive Robert Alan Kenaston, a marriage that lasted for 35 years until his death in 1970. They had a son, Robert Alan Kenaston, Jr., who married actress Claire Kelly and died of cancer in 1995, and an adopted daughter, Gail, who briefly married media mogul Merv Adelson. Billie Dove had a brief second marriage to architect John Miller, which resulted in divorce in the 1970s.

Billie Dove Career

Early life and career

Dove was born Bertha Eugenie Bohny in New York City in 1903 to Charles and Bertha (née Kagl) Bohny, both Swiss immigrants. She had a younger brother, Charles Reinhardt Bohny (1906-1963). As an adolescent, she served as a model to assist her family, and Florenz Ziegfeld hired her as a teenager in his Ziegfeld Follies Revue. In the early 1920s, she legally changed her name to Lillian Bohny and moved to Hollywood, where she first appeared in silent films. She soon became one of the twentieth century's most well-known actresses, appearing in Douglas Fairbanks' smash hit Technicolor film The Black Pirate (1926), and The American Beauty (1927).

In 1923, she married Irvin Willat, the producer of her seventh film. In 1929, the two spouses divorced. Dove had a legion of male followers, one of her most popular was Howard Hughes. She had a three-year romance with Hughes and was planning to marry him, but she ended the relationship.

In his film Cock of the Air (1932), Hughes cast her as a comedian. She appeared in his film The Age of Love (1931).

Dove was also a pilot, writer, and painter.
